An executive with Mexican carrier Telcel has suggested that Apple plans to release a revised iPhone 4 with a tweaked antenna design after the company’s free case giveaway expires at the end of September.
Marco Quatorze, director of value added services at Telcel, said that his country will initially receive the same iPhone 4 model that was released in the U.S. and resulted in the “antennagate” controversy. But, in comments he made last week, and discovered by MacRumors, he claimed that revised hardware with an improved antenna design will become available after Sept. 30, when Apple’s iPhone 4 Case Program expires.
It’s likely that Quatorze’s comments are merely speculation rather than inside information, as the notoriously secretive officials at Apple would not likely to share such information with a carrier partner. For example, earlier this year before the iPad was announced, an executive with France Telecom implied that Apple’s forthcoming tablet device would have a webcam, a conclusion based on rumors and speculation.
When the iPhone 4 launched, users discovered that they could reduce the reception of the device and, in areas of weak reception, cause dropped calls by covering the bottom left of the handset. Apple was forced to hold a press conference in July and state that all phones experience reception issues when held incorrectly.
The company also announced the iPhone 4 Case program, through which free cases will be shipped to every iPhone 4 purchase made through Sept. 30. After the deadline, the company plans to reassess the situation and conclude whether or not it will continue the giveaway.
But Quatorze’s comments, if they are in fact based on legitimate information and are not purely speculation, could suggest that Apple is quietly working on a hardware revision that it plans to release by the time the iPhone 4 Case Program concludes. Before the case giveaway was announced, various reports indicated that Apple was working on a hardware fix for the issue.

This is for all of you who told me to go away, who didn't believe me, who said I was an idiot for returning my iphone 4 and there was nothing wrong! Up Yours! Thanks to this 'revised' antenna iPhone 4 sales will rocket through the roof! And I for one will be first in line to get my hands on one of these bad boys! Lets hope that the jailbreak is possible for this one!
Well done for putting your hand up apple and admitting you're wrong…. OR NOT! This is surely two things – 1) Great for those who love apple products; but 2) A sad day for apple lovers who TRUSTED Jobs with his 'about people' company!
I don't think I will ever buy an apple product straight up from now on, until I know that it is 100% perfect and bug free!
I know i agree with you mostly, but dude sales are already skyrocketing. honestly im holding off till after sept my self, but the antennagate didnt do anything for sales at all. here in canada every day since launch, even today there is a line up at 6 am at the apple store.
there is great demand for iPhone 4 here in the UK, but at least 25% of the people, who would have bought one immediately, haven't. Skepticism is a powerful tool over here, and no one likes a product with some bad reviews. The fact that they haven't sold out in any of the stores here shows how low the demand for the phone is. On the other hand it is still a pretty awesome piece of equipment, and people are probably willing to sacrifice the 'lefty' hold on the phone problem (as most people are right handed) for the majority of pro's the phone has.
I think your way over reacting. People are dying in 3rd world counties, there is famine, poverty, and depression. Your concerns seem to be strongly surrounding a quality product released from a company called Apple. They have already proved themselves as reliable, competitive, and known for making quality products. They gave free cases to fix an issue and even are revamping the phone design when a new one will be released in June. Why are you b*itching?
Haha.
Listen what has the 3rd world got to do on a website that is here for us to comment and debate on technology? why should I hide my phone in a stupid case when I buy a phone not just for its technical qualities but also for it's aesthetic qualities? Listen to yourself? Do you buy a PS3 then wrap it up?
All I'm commenting on now is the fact that Apple did X, Y and Z to prove that there was nothing wrong with the phone (even a press conference!!) and now they are 'possibly' redesigning the phone!
well i bought a super thin clear case for my iphone 4 spent $14 on it and people ask if i have reception problems case i dont use a case point being is that this case is so think and clear its not hiding the fact that its a iphone 4
That's fair enough if you like cases then cool, you're ok with it. I have a case, but only a carry case (more like a pocket) that requires me to remove the phone when I need it (simple slip wire). I don't see the idea of wrapping up the phone permanently. That doesn't mean I disagree with you guys, just my own opinion. So from my point of view, to wrap up the phone is madness, and apple's free case program means that if I want the phone to work at it's optimum (i.e. no reception issues) then I have to wrap it up. Essentially they're selling a product that requires a case to work, not one which can work with a case!
So you have to realize that what you think is best is not essentially the best for everyone.
Everyone has their preference. People that use thin barely there cases such as myself to protect their phone from slips and falls. And people that do not want a case because they like the aesthetic feel of the device and don't care if they can possibly drop it on say concrete and cause permanent damage. I didn't get my free case for the reception issue. I got it because I want to protect my investment. So I do not see it as wrapping it up. However, I totally understand where neon is coming from that does not want a case on their phone. So whatever works for you is fine. No one here is arguing. However, I prefer to protect my phone. I rarely drop it though if ever. My iPhone 4 fell once already. My iPhone 3GS fell a total of 3 time on hard surfaces. Thankfully the case I used for it protected it and not one scratch appear on my old 3GS.
My iPhone 4 is a much more precious investment to me. This case I have is barely noticeable, clear and very thin. Way better than my 3GS' rubber confining case. So I'm actually happier and am already used to the feel. And my 4 is protected. So it's really just about how you feel about your investment and cosmetics. Not every person will have the same feeling of the value of their phone.
Am I the only one who things the credibility of this source is very weak? Considering apple sales for the iPhone 4 have hit record numbers. And for someone like myself who owns the device and still cannot replicate the antenna problem( in Canada ) I highly doubt apple will be making a revised iPhone. The only reason why they haven't released the white iPhone is due to marketing. It creates more of a buzz later on when they release it which is what apple needs considering they only make one iPhone for the year.
