Mr. Blurrycam takes new iPhone’s features for a test drive?

May 31, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

There are two sides to this coin, the way we see it. On the one hand, the handful of pictures that have just popped over on UMPC Fever demo many of the features we’re expecting to see in new iPhone hardware this summer — magnetic compass, autofocus camera, video recording capability, and a battery percentage meter in the status bar. On the other hand, having a good feel for those rumored features makes it that much easier to mock up ridiculously blurry shots of ‘em in action. The compass seems a little overdone, but then again, it’s not necessarily out of place considering the direction Apple has taken its voice recorder app in 3.0, so we’re going to play the cautiously optimistic diplomat here and say these could very well be real.

Update: We’ve swapped the top pic and added some larger, clearer looks after the break. It’s possible that we might be looking at two new variants of iPhone hardware here. Note the difference in styling between the phone on the right and the phone on the left? Well, if we’re to believe what we’ve heard about the future of the line, these could be the first photos of what Apple has in store for WWDC. The model on the right might easily be that matte version we’ve heard about… but that thing on the left? We have no idea, though it would be an insane move on a counterfeiter’s part to fake something so bizarre. What we mean is: it’s almost too weird to be fake.

Apple Now Charging to Re-Download Apps on the iPhone?

May 31, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

Looks like Apple’s begun charging full price if you try to download an app you’ve already bought over the iPhone. This did not used to be the case — previously you’d be given a dialog stating you’d already bought it and you could go ahead and re-download it for free. Now the dialog says you can still re-download it for free on your computer (via iTunes), but if you want to download it again directly to your iPhone, you’ve got to buy it again.

What’s going on here? Not bandwidth control, since free apps and updates to paid apps are still free. Not device restriction, because you can still re-download for free via iTunes (though it’s not as convenient, of course).

We’re guessing that with the on-device account management coming to iPhone 3.0 — where you can log in and out of multiple iTunes accounts right on your iPhone — Apple is putting this in place to prevent the sharing of purchases between accounts. (Otherwise you could just log into 100 other iPhones with your account and give them all your paid apps right over the air).

We can understand the concern, but we’ll miss the functionality. Personally, I bought a FedEx tracking app that I delete when I’m not expecting anything and re-download when I am. Now I can’t do that any time I want any more — only any time I’m at my computer.

What do you think, is multiple on-device accounts worth the loss of free on-device paid app re-downloads?

AT&T Announces 7.2 Mbps 3G!

May 31, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

First of all I wanna shout out to Brett McGuire and say thanks for the generous donation. Check your email for v.i.p status.

AT&T announced its plans for deployment of HSPA 7.2 3G wireless technology topping out at 7.2 Mbps, doubling the speed of AT&T’s current offerings and serving as an intermediate step to the deployment of LTE (4G) several years down the road. AT&T plans to begin rolling out the improvements later this year and will take until 2011 to fully deploy the necessary equipment. LTE trials are scheduled for 2010 with deployment to begin in 2011.

The upgrade to High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is part of AT&T’s plan for continued investments to deliver the nation’s best mobile broadband experience & the ideal combination of speed, coverage and best device line-up. AT&T today has the nation’s fastest 3G network and has attracted more than twice the number of smartphone users than any other competitor.

With its network built on the 3G UMTS technology that is commonly deployed throughout the world, AT&T can boost the speed of its mobile broadband network and offer a wide variety of devices to take advantage of it well in advance of 2011-2012, when most industry observers expect 4G LTE networks and device availability to scale. AT&T plans to begin LTE trials in 2010, with deployment beginning in 2011.

As part of and alongside its move to HSPA 7.2, AT&T announced a series of initiatives that it is planning to undertake this year:

- Near-Doubling Radio Frequency Capacity. In 2008 and 2009 to date, high-quality 850 MHz spectrum has been deployed in more than half of AT&T’s 3G network footprint to improve overall coverage and in-building reception, with additional markets planned for later in the year.
- More Bandwidth to Cell Sites. We are adding fiber-optic connectivity and additional capacity to thousands of cell sites across the country this year, expanding the critical connections that deliver traffic from a cell site into the global IP backbone network. These upgrades will support the higher mobile broadband speeds enabled by both HSPA 7.2 and LTE.
- More Cell Sites. Deployment of about 2,100 new cell sites across the country.
- Wi-Fi Integration. Many AT&T smartphones will be able to switch seamlessly between 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. AT&T customers with qualifying smartphone and 3G LaptopConnect plans have access to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network & more than 20,000 hotspots, including locations in all 50 states & at no additional charge. AT&T’s global Wi-Fi footprint covers more than 90,000 hotspots, and AT&T also can create permanent or temporary extended Wi-Fi zones in areas with high 3G network use, like a grouping of hotels or a festival.
- MicroCells. Customer trials leading toward general availability of AT&T 3G MicroCell offerings, which utilize femtocells to enhance in-building wireless coverage.

AT&T’s announcement verifies official statements made last month by AT&T executive Scott McElroy regarding the move to 7.2 Mbps 3G, although it does not address the possibility of 21 Mbps HSPA+ raised in the previous report.

A number of rumors over the past few months, including some as recently as yesterday, have pointed to the inclusion of support for the new 7.2 Mbps “3.5G” standard in the next-generation iPhone rumored for release within the next couple of months.

Palm Pre to sync with iTunes, “Flawlessly”

May 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

The title says it all – and though I’ll believe it when I see it, according to Fortune magazine it’s 100% true. They claim on plugging the Pre into a Mac, iTunes recognized the device just like an iPhone/iPod Touch and synced “flawlessly” to it. This seems to be a direct attack on Apple’s claim to “aggressively protect” it’s Intellectual Property.

Not only is Palm Pre allegedly infringing the iPhone’s patents, but Palm has found some way out to make the Pre sync with Apple’s own Music store as well!

According to the source, all the music syncs perfectly except DRM’ed tracks purchased earlier. Now, the question arises – how did Palm get ahold of this technology, which was pretty confidential? The answer is quite clear – from Jon Rubenstein. He had been a top exec at Apple, and is rumored to have been fired because of his argument of adding a physical keyboard to iPhone. In fact, a recent argument has arisen that the Palm Pre is in fact his vision of an iPhone!

Palm might not be able to sneak that easily, as this has some significant legal implications – and we already know Apple is the Lord of Lawsuits. What do you have to say about it Apple?

On the other side, Apple might just ignore this as it is them who benefits from it by selling more music…

New Functions Found In OS 3.0

May 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

A couple of new functions in the iPhone software OS 3.0 have been found. One is the option to reverse text. The other is to make reviews for songs.

In OS 3.0 you can cut, copy and paste text is a new option available. There is now a button with two arrows on it. Clicking on it will cause the selected text to reverse. Languages as Hebrew and Arabic are written from right to left. You can change the direction of the language with just one click. And whenever you deleted a piece of text or did something else, you can undo your action by shaking. In this case you will be asked to undo the reversal of the text.

The second option is to wright reviews for songs in the iTunes Store. From you Mac or PC you can write reviews for songs, podcasts etc. in the iTunes Store, but it was not available for the iPhone, until now. The picture below shows this option. Right now, people with the OS 3.0 beta installed can only read the reviews, but not make reviews of their own. You now get the message “Reviews of clients are not available at the moment…please try again later”. This will be fully accessable when the OS 3.0 is released. via iphonefreakz

Computerworld: Will video chatting be part of the next iPhone?

May 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

Matt Hamblen over at Computerworld has been pondering whether or not the iPhone 3.0 will have video conferencing capabilities amongst its other Photo and Video tricks.

The MMS software reports indicate to some observers that the next iPhone (due out July 17, according to some speculation) could support iPhone video chat, which would be possible with a good camera and microphone and a fast wireless connection.

There are some other factors to consider. First, the iPhone would need to have either a front-facing camera or a “periscope” type of mirror to bring the camera view over the top of the iPhone. Next, the hardware for video encoding/decoding would have to be pretty significant. You’ll recall that even some older Macs have trouble with the more advanced features of iChat Video (below). We expect to see a faster processor and new architecture in the upcoming iPhone, but aren’t sure that it will be able to produce the kind of quality encode/decode that Apple would expect.

Also, while AT&T’s network has the capability for high download speeds and is even moving to double-fast 7.2Mbs speed, video chat also requires significant upload bandwidth. HSDPA, the wireless standard that AT&T’s 3G uses, stands for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access. The current uplink speed is 128K. While this is theoretically able to handle 160×120 video (above), we all know that theoretical speeds and real-world speeds often don’t mesh. We also know how much AT&T likes video applications on its network (see Sling). In this regard, Apple could make a service that only worked over Wifi. Like Sling’s dilemma, this would eliminate the whole purpose of having an “anywhere device”.

Lastly, does it fit within Apple’s strategy? Perhaps long term, yes. But Apple hasn’t even brought iChat to the iPhone platform yet. While you can IM with a number of third party applications, Apple hasn’t made even the first move to bring its own client to the iPhone. An iPhone iChat client would be the first step in setting up a video conferencing ecosystem that allowed you to video chat with people on Macs (Apple would have to include this, right?).

The Computerworld articles mentioned third parties. Perhaps Cisco or Skype or some jailbreakers will make an effort to build video chatting into an application (remember Cisco is part owner of the iPhone trademark and has promised to take advantage of software development on the iPhone). But without Apple’s blessing both in building a front-facing camera and allowing video chat capabilities into the App Store, it likely won’t go far. In fact, there are already video chat apps floating around on jailbroken iPhones.

Apple to Cut 8GB iPhone Price to $99?

May 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

A research note from RBC Capital analyst Mike Abramsky suggests that Apple may drop the price of the 8GB iPhone to $99(with contract), according to a Barrons report.

In a research note this morning, he notes that the company is widely expected to unveil updated iPhones at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8. Expectations are they will keep price points at $199 and $299, with 16 GB and 32 GB models. Abramsky thinks even an evolutionary upgrade will drive a healthy upgrade cycle; he estimates 20% of the 21 million iPhone installed base will upgrade within the first year.

But he also says that the company could leverage its component and manufacturing efficiencies by offering an 8 GB version of the phone at $99, down from $199 currently. He thinks the result could provide a major lift to unit demand, with 5 million additional iPhones in FY 2009, and 22 million in FY 2010.

Chinese Wholesaler Exposes Upcoming iPhone bezel and LCD Hardware

May 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

We’ve all been eagerly waiting for the upcoming iPhone, and with each rumor the excitement level increases. However, this latest news/rumor is good as well as bad. Good first: it seems that one of the Chinese wholesalers named ChinaOnTrade.com – who gets stuff directly from the factories where Apple hardware is produced – has put a bezel and LCD screen for iPhone on sale, which it claims belongs to the next gen iPhone.

The bezel has changed -instead of the silvery color we’re familiar with, it has now turned black. The other part exposed is the LCD screen. This is sad news, if it turns out to be true, as folks were hoping for an OLED screen. Which is also what makes us think that the rumor is fake! According to iLounge, OLED even costs about half the price of LCD being used currently. OLED would also reduce the power consumption to some extent.

Rumors just keep flying as WWDC nears. Hope the new iPhone is released there itself and we can get rid of these rumors, but that doesn’t seem like the case… if you believe the rumors.
