New iPhone and iPod Touch Details? iPod to Get Camera?

May 16, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

pic is just a mock up

HardMac claims that they have heard some interesting tidbits about future iPhones and iPods from their sources.

- The future iPhone models will have exactly the same shape and size than the current iPhone 3G, despite fakes and rumors circulating.
- Apple should refresh models for the iPod nano and Touch in september. Both should now include a camera, similarly to the iPhone.

The iPhone retaining its current shape and size is perhaps consistent with the recent rumors from China, but the addition of a camera to the iPod Touch and iPod Nano is a new possibility.

A camera on the iPod Touch may make the most sense as it would bring the iPhone and iPod Touch closer together in terms of features. A camera addition to the iPod Nano, however, would be a surprise. There has been talk that Apple might be positioning video to be a killer feature in the next iPhones, and this could be an extension of that.

Meanwhile, some Best Buy inventory screenshots reveal some product placeholders for something called “Project Charlie”. Some are speculating that this could be the new iPhone, but we have our doubts of the significance of this. In the past, it’s been shown that Best Buy frequently adds inventory items without any insider knowledge.

Tony Hawk 2 on iPhone

May 15, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

Yesterday, a video for what was supposedly Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 on the iPhone leaked, but we here at Joystiq HQ couldn’t really bring ourselves to believe it. The video — it was pulled, but we’ve found another and placed it after the break for your scrutinizing eyes — is suspect for a variety of reasons. But, even though we have a hard time believing it, the president of LTI Gray Matter, Daniel R. Chavez, told TouchArcade that it is, in fact, legit.

Chavez says that his company merely used Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 “strictly as a ‘test subject’ and not at the request of Activision or anyone else.” When LTI had finished and showed Activision what Chavez’s company had come up with, it didn’t express much interest in the title, sadly. And with a new game about to be revealed, Activision is concerned that marketing an iPhone game could cause confusion.

It’s a shame, really. THPS2 is arguably the best in the series, and based on the gameplay in the video after the break, it looks like it would be a fun time on the iPhone.

iPhone Available Online, and Get It Shipped To Your Door!

May 14, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

Today, Apple’s US online store has started taking orders for direct shipments of the iPhone 3G. Previously, the iPhone was available only in retail stores when purchased from Apple, although AT&T offered sales both in its own retail stores and through its online store.

The new distribution method is valid only for customers new to AT&T, while existing AT&T customers will have to pick up their iPhones at local Apple retail stores. New customers are taken through a series of screens in which they must submit their billing address to allow AT&T to run a credit check, select their rate plan, and either reserve an iPhone for pickup at a local Apple store or complete the purchase and have the iPhone shipped directly to them.

Apple is exploring iPhone/TV video streaming

May 14, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

With tens of gigabytes of storage on the upcoming iPhone and it’s superb ability to play media content, your handset can actually become the main media hub in your home entertainment system.

There’s one feature missing, that prevents the iPhone from realizing this potential though. The ability to seamlessly stream media content to your home cinema system.

That might be changing soon, if the feature, described in Apple’s patent app “Media out interface”, gets implemented.

In this patent app Apple describes the iPhone capable of streaming video content from a dock to a connected TV monitor.

The docked iPhone can be controlled by the TV/Apple remote. The interface also allows you to reject, answer and end incoming calls. Video playback is stopped when the incoming call is detected.

To tell the truth, I don’t see anything groundbreaking in this new possible feature. Other phones have been able to stream video to TV via TV out port for years. And then there is the whole DLNA initiative too.

Still, none of these things are adopted and used widely, beyond the circle of some high end consumers and geeks. So I guess it might take Apple to finally show the masses how cool it is to have all that content on your smartphone seamlessly show up on your home plasma TV.

Rumored New iPhone Specs

May 14, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

A prominent Chinese iPhone forum is reporting leaks of the some specifications for the new iPhone range. These are all unconfirmed rumors, but interesting food-for-thought nevertheless:

* 600MHz processor;
* 256MB DRAM;
* 32GB storage;
* 3.2MP auto-focus camera;
* magnetometer;
* FM radio receiver.

Take this for what it is — a totally unverified rumor from a Chinese forum — but a set of specs for a next-gen iPhone have leaked out along with this screenshot, and they’re not entirely far-fetched. According to the alleged leak, iPhone model MB717LL 9 (“iPhone2,1″ perhaps?) will have a 600MHz processor (up from the current 400MHz unit), 256MB of RAM (from the current 128MB), 32GB of storage, a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, as well as a digital compass and FM radio, all while retaining the same battery, basic shape, and screen size. Do we believe it? Well, if we were to conservatively guess at specs for a next-gen Apple phone that’s pretty much what we’d come up with — with the exception of FM — so we’re not shaking our heads too hard. Plus we’ve definitely seen evidence that a compass will figure into the equation, and there’s endless whispers that the camera will see an upgrade. Still, only Steve and the gang know for sure, and we’re (probably) not finding out till they’re ready — WWDC, are you here yet?

Steve Jobs to Announce New iPhone in Late June Rather Than at WWDC?

May 14, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

The new iPhone will not be announced at WWDC rather Steve Jobs will return to announce it in late June, according to a report by Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster.

Apple just recently announced that Phil Schiller would lead the WWDC keynote and Munster believes that this address will focus only on iPhone 3.0 and Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

“Although this may raise some concern among investors that Steve Jobs will not return [at all],” wrote Munster, “we continue to expect his return to the company by the end of June.”

Munster believes that a second event is in store which will be jam packed with news.

“We expect Apple to host a special event in late June or early July to launch a family of iPhones. We continue to expect multiple models, possibly a high-end iPhone with improved specs from the current version and a low-end version with lower capacity and fewer features along with a reduced pricing plan. Such a model could also be used in Apple’s launch of the iPhone into China as soon as the end of summer ‘09.
