How to Update Your 2G iPhone to 3.0 Without Losing Activation, Unlock

June 18, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

If you click the Update button in iTunes to install the 3.0 firmware you will not loose your unlock. (2G iPhones ONLY).

HOWEVER, if you are using the 2G iPhone on an unofficial carrier you may loose your activation. This means that will your network will be detected but you will not be able to use your iPhone.

You will loose your activation if you used QuickPwn to jailbreak your iPhone. If you used PwnageTool you will not.

If you are super excited about iPhone 3.0 and wish to update immediately, either make sure you jailbroke with PwnageTool or rejailbreak using PwnageTool and then do the update.

Otherwise wait for a little bit and the iPhone Dev-Team will release new PwnageTool and QuickPwn utilities shortly.

    No if your iphone is activated and unlocked all you have to do is either download the 3.0 update and hold shift then click update and go to the 3.0 software you downloaded and install or you can just click on update and it will update your iphone 2g and it will stay activated. I warn you that you will lose all your cydia apps and you will not be able to jailbreak until tonight

    If you are not on at&t you can tap on update and it will update your phone and it will stay activated. Do not restore if you want to keep your iPhone activated, instead of clicking restore click update. I do warn you that you will lose cydia and any jailbroken apps you have installed.

    Network wise your iPhone 2g will always be unlocked and if you lose the itunes activation all you have to do is put an at&t sim card in your phone and open itunes, it will read the card and activate. Thats if it fails which Im sure it won't

    Let me see if i get this straight. I have a first gen iPhone (not 3G) running firmware 2.2. I jailbroke, unlocked and activated it using QuickPwn. If i hit update in itunes, will it stay unlocked but deactivate? (e.i. be stuck with an activation screen on the phone)

  14. bEluM Says:

    ETA i’m not an at&t user

  15. SoSly Says:

    No it will stay activated and everything will work fine.

  16. Jonathans Says:

    BS. all of this applies to a mac only, if you orginially unlocked with quickpwn (windows), it will not get past activation.
