10 ways to save battery life

June 05, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

well im sure one of the biggest complaint of the iphone is the battery life. I cant even get a full 5 hrs on heavy usage, so here are 10 tips to save on battery life!!

Note one of our readers has a good point, this is what he says that also adds on to battery drain.

“slymik-Nice guide~ To add to that, I think the key problem to battery lies in background apps like iRealsms, backgrounder, winterboard, etc. I think background resource-heavy apps just drain battery like nuts.” Thanks for that also which pretty much is commen sense.

10) Keep It On
There really isn’t any reason turn it off at the end of the day. As long as it is in ’sleep mode’(without playing music) it turns all network activity off. The device actually uses a lot of the batter just to turn it on. . .even more than if you had just left it on.

9) Turn Sound Effects Off
You can go into Settings -> General -> Sound Effects and turn it off. Or at least set it to either Speaker or Headphones. . .not Both(which it is by default).

8) Turn EQ Off
You can go into Settings -> Music -> EQ and turn it off. This will use less resources to monitor the EQ.

7) Less Email Addresses
You can go into Settings -> Mail and disable a few of your email accounts. The less email addresses your iPhone or iPod Touch has to check, the more battery life you will have. This is because of network activity usage.

7a) Check Email Less Often
You can go into Settings -> Mail -> Auto-Check and set this to manual. . .or at least Every hour(as opposed to 15/30 minutes). Just like above, the your device has to connect to Wifi/Edge the longer your battery will last.

6) Set Auto-Lock
You can go into Settings -> General -> Auto-Lock and set it to 1-3 minutes(I have mine set to 1). The longer your screen is turned on the more it uses the battery. Either do this or get used to putting it into ’sleep mode’ immediately after usage.

5) Turn BlueTooth Off
You can either do this via Settings or in the BossPrefs application.

4) Keep Brightness Dim
You can go into Settings -> Brightness and move the bar on the top toward the left. Go as far to the left as you can(without sacrificing quality). The less bright the screen has to be the longer your battery will last.

4a) Turn Auto-Brightness Off
You can go into Settings -> Brightness and turn Auto-Brightness off. This will not only prevent the device from increasing the brightness level. It will also use less resources. . .since it doesn’t have to monitor anything.

3) Turn Edge Off
Much like BlueTooth, you can do this from either Settings or the 3rd party application BossPrefs.

2) Turn SSH Off
You can go into the application BossPrefs, Services, or the default SSH icon and turn this service on/off. This runs in the background when any network activity is available. This is one of the biggest reasons people who Jailbreak their iPhones and iPod Touches have very poor battery life.

1) Turn WiFi Off
Even more than SSH, WiFi really uses your battery. Paired with MobileSafari browsing, your battery will not even last 3 hours. I normally just put the device into sleep mode, and it turns of WiFi automatically. But, when music is playing WiFi is on, and it will deplete your battery with the quickness.

This is a lot of things to monitor. . .but if you get into the habit of turning services on/off(much like turning off a light when you leave the room). . .you could go an extra 2-3 days between charging sessions.

Confirmed Safari Will Use Geolocation On 3.0

June 05, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

Until a few days ago was just a rumor, but today we are confirming that the Firmware 3.0 will be able to use various services of geo. Here are some screenshots and other information that was provided by our Matthew G.

First note that this feature opens the way for many new services such as Google Latitude, DVD Online, and will also automatically fill in the fields of registration form, which are usually required the insertion of the Country, the City of CAP etc.

The screenshot you see shows an optimized version of Google Maps (accessible from here: http://gjm.google.com/mwm) to display via Safari and it can take advantage of GPS to signal our position through a small blue dot.

We can also find information on local phone numbers and create a travel itinerary in writing by viewing all directions.

If the future is represented by the internet, then that is certainly dell’iPhone rosy.

New iPhone to be called “iPhone Video?”

June 05, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

Further fueling the iPhone fire (try saying that one five times fast), TUAW has received an anonymous tip stating that AT&T’s support website will be updated with “iPhone Video” as one of the model choices when choosing Apple as the phone manufacturer.

While I only see the original iPhone and 3G choices on the support site now, it stands to reason that this photo may have been taken from a screen showing unpublished support content. Click the image for the full-res photo.

This adds to some already interesting news, reported earlier by AppleInsider, that new model placeholders have begun appearing in inventory for Carphone Warehouse, a retailer that resells the iPhone. These models were labeled with a “V3″, which could simply mean Version 3, or the V may also stand for “Video” or “Video 3G”. Other retailers have also recently reported additional entries or placeholders showing up in their inventories, and many carriers have also received end of life notices for the current 3G models.

So even if a new model isn’t announced at WWDC, it’s a pretty safe bet that Apple has something in the pipeline.

More Leaked iPhone Images

June 05, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

In the days leading up to any major Apple event. the rumors tend to reach a frenzy with an avalanche of reports and images claiming to be real. The most common “fake” images that begin circulating are mockups that claim to be screenshots from Apple’s site. Unless these “leaks” were actually witnessed by a large audience of people, they have historically always been fake.

The latest of these images come from italian site SpazioCellulare who posted an image yesterday and a more convincing set today (embedded above) that seems one of the more believable images that have been posted. The image appears to reflect many of the circulating rumors that have been released about the iPhone and as such may simply be an ambitious mockup. TUAW notes there are some unique findings to the images, however. There appears to be an extra button on the lower-side of the case (camera shutter?) and the headphone jack for the iPhone appears to have moved down to the bottom of the unit. We certainly aren’t confident that these images are real, but do serve as interesting speculation.

Some other rumors with even less evidence surrounding them include claims of iPhone Video and a German launch (iFun.de) of the next iPhone set for June 19th.

We’re only 4 days away from the WWDC keynote. Stay tuned.

New iPhone Coming in 4 Storage Capacities, from 4GB to 32GB

June 05, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

It seems that the rumor mill won’t be silenced… But this one seems to be from a trusted source.

The rumor has it that PCS Type Review Certification Board, which certifies handsets for use with carriers such as AT&T has approved upcoming iPhone model and that too in FOUR capacities i.e 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB as compared to current 8GB and 16GB model. This even increases the credibility of the rumor about a $99 iPhone this summer.

This rumor game has been driving the people crazy since many weeks for now, especially as WWDC keynote gets closer. It has become hard to understand what to believe and what not!

Hope that all this chaos soon ends with the WWDC

WWDC 2009 Banner Unveiled at Moscone West

June 05, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

With only a few days left for WWDC, Apple has unveiled the banner. From this years event tag-line, it seems that the whole event will be surrounding AppStore. The tag-line says:

“One Year Later. Light-years Ahead”

AppStore has been the biggest success story in mobile industry last year and recently. With over 45,00 apps, the downloads have exceeded 1 billion – in just NINE months of it’s public release!

Besides lab sessions, the new firmware will also gain prominence in the keynote – to be delivered by Phil Schiller on June 8th – and is expected to release immediately after the keynote, given the early support provided in iTunes 8.2, just released.

New 16GB, 32GB iPhones appear in Carphone Warehouse systems

June 05, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

Carphone Warehouse, the largest independent European mobile phone retailer and an official iPhone reseller, added four placeholders to their inventory list for new iPhone models earlier today, sources tell AppleInsider.

With new iPhone models expected this summer, in addition to the previously-announced 3.0 firmware, Carphone Warehouse appears to be gearing up for the change. A screenshot of its inventory system provided by a person known to have access to such information shows placeholders for both 16GB and 32GB iPhones in both white and black. They’re mixed in among the existing and previous iPhone models, having reportedly cropped up just hours ago.

Numerous reports and inadvertent leaks (1, 2, 3) from Apple’s partners over the past several weeks have signaled the arrival of third-generation iPhones in capacities of 16GB and 32GB. While the changes to Carphone Warehouse’s systems should not be treated as confirmation of new iPhone specifications, the retailers status as an official iPhone reseller could potentially make it privy to such information.

Coupled with Best Buy’s recently-released internal memorandum notifying employees of expected low inventory of the current iPhone 3G, as well as a similar advisory issued by Brightpoint, an iPhone distributor in Australia, retail signs are aligned in pointing to new iPhone disclosures early next week at Apple’s annual developers conference.

Last year, Apple introduced the iPhone 3G at the start of its 2008 developers conference on June 9th and announced availability would follow on July 11th. During the four weeks in between, supply of original iPhones were close to non-existent. Thursday’s report out of Carphone Warehouse was accompanied by word that the retailer has simultaneously pushed out some of its poster and offer changes until July 7, but AppleInsider has no reason to believe that date is of any broader significance.
