Why Jailbreak ?

Thanks to Anthony Kashmanian over at xsellize for this, enjoy your new staff position at xsellize forums.

Intro.

So you finally made the executive decision, pulled the trigger, and went out and bought your new iPhone. You get home and log onto your computer for some iPhone reading and start hearing the word ‘jailbreak’. This is exactly what happened to me a year ago after I bought my 3G. Since you’re at this site, reading this article you’re in great shape already.

What is jailbreaking

Well jailbreaking is the ‘hacking’ of the iPhone that allows you to run NON-approved software. That is software that is not approved by Apple. Why would you want this? Apple must approve every single app that makes it to the app store and each app must follow strict Apple rules. Apple has been known to ban certain apps for the dumbest reason, Google it and you’ll see. When you jailbreak you’ve opened your phone up to an entire new world of apps with limitless possibilities.

What’s the Catch? Will I Brick My Phone

There is absolutely no catch once you jailbreak, all the normal functions will still operate just as they did before. Now you’re just able to install apps that make your ‘phone’ more like your computer. Apple has recently declared jailbreaking illegal, BUT IT IS NOT. Don’t be fooled, jailbreaking is not illegal, it’s your device and you can do what you want to it just like your home computer.

Is It Hard To Do? How Do I Do It

No it’s not hard if you can click a mouse, then you can jailbreak your shiny new phone. First give your phone a full restore and set it up as a new phone. Download one of the ‘Redsn0w’ 0.8 torrents from HERE. Then Google your iPhone model for its firmware. Once this is done just open Redsn0w and follow the directions. Only select Cydia when it asks for that option, don’t worry you’ll see it. Now just follow the rest of the directions on Redsn0w and when it’s done you’ll be all set and onto a new world of apps for your iPhone.

What Can I Do Now

After you have jailbroken there will an icon labeled ‘Cydia’. What the hell is Cydia you’re asking yourself, well Cydia is your new jailbreak app store. Open it up and check it out, always research an app before you download just so you know what it does and how it works. There is always a jailbreak app for whatever you need to accomplish.

Unlocking..Biggest jailbreak reason

Want to unlock your phone so you can use it with another carrier that supports SIM’s. Go to Cydia, tap ‘manage’, tap ‘sources’, hit ‘add’. Now add http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com (NOTE..The ‘0’ in snow is the number zero NOT the letter o) Once all that’s done click on your newly added repo and download Ultrasn0w. BAM, you now have a fully unlocked phone!

Give Me Some More Cool Examples

1: Google ‘cracked’ apps; these will be app store apps. Guess what, download those and never pay for an app store app again.

2: Have you ever wanted an app where you can be running a program but wanted to send a SMS message without closing your running program? You can now, the feature is called quick respond or quick reply and there are a variety of SMS apps that offer them. My two favorite apps for this our BiteSMS and iRealSMS.

3: Have you ever wanted to customize your icons, background, and lockscreen? Go to Cydia and download Winterboard. Then go back to Cydia and install a theme. Your theme can now be found in Winterboard, so go ahead and apply it. BAM you now have a whole new interface.

4: Want to record video on your 3G or 2G, Go download Cycorder and film away.

5: Want turn by turn GPS that actually works! Go download xGPS and have fun traveling.

Why Not

Those are just a few of the endless possibilities that jailbreaking offers. The question at the end becomes, why not. Why not jailbreak your phone, as you can see there is absolutely no reason not to.
