BossPaper v0.93 Beta Released

July 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Bosspaper will hopefully change the way we use background wallpapers on our iphones/ipods and give us a much more pleasent and easy interface to work with. Below is what bigboss had to say on his site about his beta release:

I am releasing BossPaper v0.91 BossPaper v0.93 beta tonight for testing (if you grabbed anything < 0.93, please update). There are still a few features that I plan to implement that are not in this version, but I think it is a good idea to start getting feedback.

In order to test it, you must install the bigboss beta repository, which I have also released into Cydia for those of you that said you are a “hacker” or “developer” when you loaded Cydia the first time. BossPaper will automatically install logmailer because if you have any problems, I would like a logmailer output of your syslog. If you don’t plan to send syslogs to me when having problems, well then you should not try to beta test this. Of course the first non-beta repo version will not require logmailer. If you hate having logmailer icon, you can hide it for now using SBSettings.

Based on the success / failure of this release, I may move it into a public repository before Read more…

Hon Hai to build Apple tablets as soon as September

July 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

A Chinese newspaper has reported that Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. will assemble tablet computers for Apple that may appear for sale as early as September.

The report, published by the Taipei, Taiwan Apple Daily paper and carried by Dow Jones, cited unnamed sources in reporting that Wintek Corp. would supply flat panel screens for the device and that its battery would be built by Dynapack International Technology Corp.

According to AppleInsider’s own sources, Apple’s expected new tablet device, with a 10″ display and integrated 3G service, is not anticipated to arrive before early 2010.

That suggests that the report related to Hon Hai may instead reflect the upcoming third generation iPod touch, which could easily be described as a “tablet computer” and is expected to arrive in the September iPod refresh as both previous new generations.

However, the paper specifically cites the device in its report as having a 10″ screen and 3G data service and describes it as being an enlarged iPod, not just a revamped version of the existing iPod touch. The report indicates the model will hit the market in September or October in order to hit the Christmas holiday season, but notes that reports in the ‘foreign media’ are not expecting it to arrive until the first quarter of next year.

China Unicom 3-year iPhone deal

July 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

A Shanghai newspaper reports Apple has reached a three year exclusive agreement with China Unicom to market the iPhone, though company officials say a deal is not yet official.

Shanghai Securities News cited unnamed sources in announcing the alleged deal. But after the news broke, Dow Jones Newswires reported that China Unicom spokesperson Sophia Tso has officially said her company and Apple are still in discussions and have not reached an agreement.

The deal reportedly set a minimum threshold of CNY 5 billion ($731 million) in iPhone sales, guaranteeing orders of one to two million devices per year. The source said China Unicom could begin selling the iPhone as early as late September.

Other possible details, as relayed by Fortune Brainstorm Tech: China Unicom will pay Apple 3,000 CNY ($439) per unit and price it below that for customers, Unicom promises to sell a minimum 1 million units per year, and the Chinese iPhone will access “Apple’s China App Store.”

In February, China Unicom was fingered as Apple’s most likely partner by British consulting firm Ovum, followed by a leak of iPhone information inadvertently posted by China Unicom’s website and an admission by the company that it was in talks with Apple in March. Earlier this month, Analyst Shaw Wu of Kaufman Bros. similarly claimed that China Unicom would be the frontrunner in marketing Apple’s phone in the country. Read more…

Sega Asks What Should They Bring to the iPhone Next?

July 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

This afternoon Sega invited iPhone and iPod Touch gamers to an online brainstorming session on their blog looking for new ideas of what they should bring to the App Store next:

Any idea is welcome, no matter how out there or random, we’ll take it and add it the list for the presentation. There are some restrictions, but that’s expected, right? First, it has to be a Sega game, meaning no other publisher’s titles, even if they did appear on our old systems (I know, I know, I want to see a Road Rash sequel too). Second, we can’t accept original game ideas, we’re not looking for acquisitions for new titles in this brainstorming session. And that’s pretty much it, go to town and tell us what you want to see.

They’re gathering feedback on Twitter, Facebook, their forums, and on the actual blog post itself. Discuss with other TouchArcaders in our forum or in this story’s comment thread. So, if you’d like to see a Sega game made, now is your chance!

Samsung presents new ARM Cortex processor 1GHz-8! Will it make the next iPhone?

July 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Samsung has today unveiled the new ARM processor that could easily be implemented in the next smartphone. Cortex-A8. The code name is Hummingbird and architetutta is the same as the 3GS: Cortex-A8. Unlike the old processor, this will have a clock at 1GHz, with much better performance of the 833 MHz processor currently being used.

The new processor also is smaller, more efficient in terms of energy and unable to move even lower in time. We can execute 2 billion instructions per second, consuming only 640mW of power, with less than 1V voltage. It ‘a dual-issue processor (which executes two instructions at a time), with an extension called Neon, which can speed up the audio and video.

I would love to see this in the next gen iphone. Think of the possibilities :)

Foxconn official says employee had suspicious history

July 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

After a Foxconn employee allegedly committed suicide when an iPhone prototype vanished, an official with the Chinese manufacturing company said the former employee had demonstrated a pattern of suspiciously losing products.

Speaking with The New York Times, James Lee, general manager of China operations, said the employee’s explanation for the missing phone did not seem credible.

“Several times he had some products missing, then he got them back,” Lee said. “We don’t know who took the product, but it was at his stop.”

A Times reporter was given a tour of the Chinese company’s facilities, but was not allowed to see the assembly line to protect trade secrets. When the reporter spoke with Read more…
