Windows 95 on the iPhone Fake

July 23, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

We had here already reported that Windows 95 to run the iPhone. Now, Fabiano from our partners that’s precisely iSpazio investigated and found that almost everything is fake except the cursor. We have, despite all this for you a tutorial with her fake Windows 95 on your iPhone, you can run.

The whole, however, also brings a few problems, probably the most realistic for the added: The performance and the keyboard. Even when it takes iPhone 3GS satte 3-4 min to fake Windows to start (as dazert Meet it with an iPhone 3G more) and the keyboard of the iPhone can not use that means you can not make keystrokes.

Tomorrow will see the whole as a single download in Cydia under the iSpazio Repository published.

Now for the tutorial:

  1. The Windows 95 image of Bochs here to download
  2. SSH on the iPhone line (alternatively via DiskAid)
  3. Via Cyberduck / WinSCP via WLAN with the iPhone connect
  4. The downloaded “bochs.deb” via SSH to the folder / tmp to copy the iPhone.
  5. If your Mobile Terminal from Cydia not yet have, invites you now

Edit System Strings For 3.0 No Computer Required

July 23, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Ever since the first jailbreak back in the 1.1.1 days, customizing our iphones have been one of the main reasons to jailbreak. The main things most people want after they jailbreak are custom icons, custom background wallpapers, and custom sounds but there is still one very cool thing you can do to make your custom theme even better. You can change the system strings to whatever you like, I know your probably thinking what is that. The system strings are the words that are on your iphone which say “slide to unlock”  before you unlock your phone or “slide to power off” right before you turn it off. It has always been kinda tricky and time comsuming to change the system strings, as one bad edit of the .strings file can mess up your phone. It is now very simple, easy, and not that time consuming to do this. Check out the video below compliments of Jima6636 to learn how to do all of this using winterboard and ifile:

iFart Mobile vs. PullMyFinger

July 23, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

This is yet another example of people getting rich quick off the dumbest and most useless apps.. I guess we can’t blame the creators though because somehow the apps are selling meaning us the consumers are buying the apps . I love these comedy central bloopers ;)

Portal For iPhone Confirmed

July 22, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

A few minutes ago we received a provisioned copy of the Portal clone built in Unity that we posted about last week. There have been suspicions since the original video was posted that the entire thing was an elaborate hoax, but we can now confirm that it actually does exist.

The game in its current state is rather buggy, I’ve fallen through the world a few times and the way gravity is handled when going through portals needs some tweaking. Also, according to the developer, the controls are not as good as they’d like them to be, a sentiment I can get behind as playing the game right now feels rather clumsy.

Here is a short video of me playing through the first room and entering the second room of the first level: Read more…

BossPaper – BigBoss Upcoming Wallpaper App

July 22, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

I have been working on a new FREE app called “BossPaper”. This is a very configurable advanced wallpaper app that lets you control what wallpaper shows up on your SpringBoard. You may be saying, “But Winterboard does that!” Sort of, but not like this. BossPaper can work with Winterboard (or without). Read on for details.

Last year, Saurik released Winterboard. This enabled some new features none of us have ever seen before such as rotating desktop wallpapers via Javascript HTML pages. While this was revolutionary for us iPhone owners, it also came at a cost. Performance running these themes sucks. There are a few ways the Javascript based images can be implemented and all of them have problems. If you load them all into memory, Springboard uses a signficant amount of memory. If you fade them, Springboard uses a lot of CPU. Javascript is very memory / CPU heavy. In addition, the Javascript runs behind all applications and while applications run. This impacts performance heavily and causes apps to lag even while you’re using them and not on SpringBoard. In addition, the script continues to run even while the iPhone is locked draining battery.

I have had it on my list to solve this for a while. The result is BossPaper. BossPaper is an advanced wallpaper manager that puts total control of wallpapers into your hands. BossPaper has these features:

  • You control which images are displayed. You can use camera roll, installed themes, or a combination of! With Winterboard, you could only install a theme and use what came with it. Now you can use images from many themes or other sources such as BossPaper packs.
  • You can use your own images from the camera!
  • BossPaper stops rotating images as soon as an app launches. This prevents battery and CPU drain.
  • BossPaper stops rotating images as soon as the iPhone is locked. This prevents battery drain.
  • BossPaper uses very little memory and CPU! It does Read more…

AIM Push Problems – Hacktivated iPhones to Blame?

July 22, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Crunchgear is reporting that Till Schadde of Equinux has been noticing some weirdness with his AIM app and push notifications. Namely, Schadde has been seeing his AIM messages go to random recipients. He discovered this by being notified that a message he had sent to his iPhone version of AIM was redirected to a random stranger. That stranger then contacted Schaddle to let him know and to supply him with a screen shot of his message.
In the past, TiPb has speculated that there are indeed some issues with hacktivated iPhones. And for those of you who are unfamiliar with “hackivation”, it’s simply a process that tricks an iPhone into believing it has authorized itself with Apple via iTunes and is ready to be used, but is actually activated by other, non-Apple software.
These hacktivated iPhones are not being assigned a unique push ID by Apple the way iTunes activiated iPhones with legit SIMs are. One of our readers, Greg, summed it up best in the comments from our last push notification issue post:

The difference is hacktivation, not jailbreaking. There’s a fair bit of crypto involved in the activation process and the “fixes” so far involve taking certs from other phones. This will only work for so long; eventually people are going to have to be on official carriers and paying official plan rates for Push and YouTube and who knows what they’ll cert off in 3.1 or 4.0?

The Dev Team seem to be working on a fix but it does not appear it will come anytime soon as they’ve avoided even posting a fix on their blog. Instead, they quietly posted a link on their Twitter page to a very beta fix.

Chinese Worker Commits Suicide After Losing iPhone Prototype

July 21, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Last Thursday, 25 year-old Sun Danyong committed suicide after a fourth-generation iPhone prototype he was responsible for went missing. It’s a story, from what tech-industry friends in China tell me, of how Apple’s secretive ways send extreme pressure all the way down the company’s international supply chain.

Sun was a recent engineering graduate, and had landed a job handling product communications for electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn in Shenzhen, a leading city in the industry-heavy Guangdong province near Hong Kong. He was tasked with shipping iPhone prototypes from Foxconn to Apple. The sequence of events goes as follows, based on news reports currently coming out of China, including a major local paper, Southern Metropolis Daily. The news has yet to be reported in the English-language press, at least that I’ve seen, although it’s all over the Chinese-language Twittersphere.

On Thursday, July 9th, Sun got 16 prototype phones from the assembly line at a local Foxconn factory. At some point in the next few days, he discovered that one of the phones was missing. He suspected that it had been left at the factory, but couldn’t find it. On Monday, July 13, he reported the missing phone to his boss. Then, that Wednesday, three Foxconn employees searched his apartment — illegally, according to Chinese law. Accusations are flying that Sun was detained and physically abused during the investigation, although this has not been substantiated (possible evidence: there’s this somewhat garbled and potentially faked instant message exchange from Sun shortly before his death).

What is known: On Thursday — a little after 3 a.m. according to surveillance videos in the apartment building — he jumped out of a window Read more…
