SwagBucks styled apps pulled from Cydia

July 21, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Bigboss is being the boss, He has removed all of the Swagbucks like apps from his cydia repository and i’m sure most major repository owners/maintainers will also be taking them down. As he has posted below he believes it is just a junk app that helps someone make money to buy off of an online store by using us when we download and use their app. Check out what bigboss had to say about this below:

BigBoss

“I met with the major repository owners today and we all think SwagBucks apps are a scam against the user. Basically, it’s an app that you use to do some shopping. The guy that wrote the app then accumulates swag buck points or such to buy products. It wasn’t so bad, but it seems that releasing a single swagbuck app isnt enough. The developers want to release 3, 4, 5 of these so that they get somehow even more and more users usingthem. It turns out to be quite a flood of garbage in Cydia.

Therefore, as of right now, I have Read more…

Your iPhone can Read Barcodes

July 21, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

RedLaser, a new app available via Cydia, is very cool. It’s a barcode reader for the iPhone – and it works even on the 2G and 3G iPhones, without auto-focus. Reading straight from the camera feed (no need to take a photo, just hold it up to the bar code and wait a second), all 3 models of iPhone can run RedLaser. Oh, and its free… which is a nice price.

The app lets you do online price comparisons using Google’s db, and view items in Amazon.com. There’s all sorts of extra options available as well – and way more possible with their SDK. Imagine reading reviews on scanned books, beaming movies to your TiVo, adding milk to your grocery list… possibilities are endles.

RedLaser’s magic comes from their scanner algorithm. We chatted with Jeffrey Powers, co-founder of Occipital (make of RedLaser), who said:

Quote:
The bars are so blurry up close that we had to create software that is able to mathematically compensate in a way that had never been done before on the iPhone. Getting it to run fast enough for the phone was another big feat. We spent three months getting it to the level it’s at now.

Occipital is doing some cool stuff, like an SDK for using their RedLaser – look for AppStore app cor.kz to add barcode scanning support to their wine app soon.

But for some REALLY cool stuff they’re looking into using the iPhone’s camera and GPS setup… check out the below video from a blog they posted a few months back… now THAT’S intense.

Which Ads Do You Like Better

July 21, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Till this day the “Get a mac” ads delivered by apple have been very funny and don’t get old but now that Microsoft started putting out ads of their own it seems that Apple finally got some ad competition. To me both ads are good but Microsoft does a great job at sticking to the point and winning consumers over by showing that PC’s are a lot cheaper than macs and not trashing on the competitors os system like the “Get a mac” ads do. By that I mean that mostly every “Get a mac” ad that airs on tv is always talking about how much better a mac is then a pc, whether it be “macs don’t ever get viruses” to “macs run easier to understand software”. Microsoft ads on the other hand have some class and instead of attacking Apple’s mac computers directly they show how much cheaper they are than macs and how a more expensive mac has almost the exact same specs as a $800 dollar pc. Now you tell me, which ads do you like and what are your opinions on the matter?

Microsoft says Apple wants ‘Laptop Hunter’ ads pulled

July 21, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

I sure do love some competition, even though I myself am an Apple Fanatic I love seeing companies go at it as us the consumers are the ones who benefit from it. Check out the article below to see how Apple and Microsoft are dukin it out with their own t.v. ads.

Microsoft’s chief operating officer claimed Wednesday that Apple’s legal department demanded the Windows maker pull its “Laptop Hunter” ads – the TV spots in which company casts Macs as overpriced novelty items.

Speaking Wednesday at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2009 in New Orleans, La., COO Kevin Turner said the advertisements, which portray Windows PCs as a better value than Apple products, have proven effective. So much so, according to a transcript of Turner’s speech, that he received a phone call from Apple.

And so we’ve been running these PC value ads. Just giving people saying, hey, what are you looking to spend? “Oh, I’m looking to spend less than $1,000.” Well we’ll give you $1,000. Go in and look and see what you can buy. And they come out and they just show them. Those are completely unscripted commercials.

And you know why I know they’re working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey — this is a true story — saying, Read more…

My Eyes Only Photo Released

July 21, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Ever since My Eyes Only came out I bought the app and am loving it, My Eyes Only is an application that lets you put a lot of personal info such as credit card numbers, Id’s, and your own website login info into your iphone but it encrypts and makes it safer to have on the iPhone, unlike the regular notes.app. The same company SoftwareOps has just released My Eyes Only Photo in the appstore and I must say if your that person who has crazy wild night photos from parties on your iPhone, then this app is for you. There have been plenty of apps released in the appstore claiming to keep your photos safe but in my opinion, SoftwareOps has the best support and they update their apps frequently so you know that you will have the latest up to date app with no security flaws, or bugs. Enjoy the privacy you party animals

Universal bringing BD-Live integration to the iPhone

July 21, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Although Apple still hasn’t managed to achieve feature parity with any of its competitors by enabling Blu-ray playback in OS X, it looks like Universal’s bringing the mountain to the Mac — or at least the iPhone. At first, the upcoming special edition of Fast and Furious will feature integration with a special iPhone / iPod touch app that’ll allow viewers to control 360-degree models of the cars in the “Virtual Car Garage,” but later Universal releases will feature the ability to control movie playback, read annotations while watching your flick, and even download ancillary video content for later playback on the go. Sounds like pretty nifty stuff — let’s hope El Steve reconsiders his whole “bag of hurt” stance when he gets the demo.

Ultratips From The Dev-Team

July 20, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The iphone Dev-Team is keeping up their great help and support by posting Ultratips on their blog. These tips answer questions most people are asking about the software unlock released by the Dev-Team. Check out what they posted below:

“It looks like version 0.9 of ultrasn0w fixed up the vast majority of any problems people were seeing with the 3G/3GS carrier unlock. But here’s a brief list of fixes for anyone still seeing problems:

  • Unusual battery depletion is almost always caused by people choosing to “Restore from backup” instead of “Setup as new iPhone” when iTunes asks you.  This isn’t caused by either the jailbreak or the unlock, but it’s a common 3.0 snafu. The fix is to just re-run the official 3.0 restore and choose “Setup as new” this time.  Your music and apps and all that will still be synced, but you’ll get rid of any conflicting wifi, bluetooth, or carrier settings.  Then just re-run redsn0w and install ultrasn0w.
  • Remember, ultrasn0w works with hacktivated phones too, Read more…

Paul Wall Shoots Music Video With An Iphone

July 20, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Video was shot and edited using the iPhone 3G S!!! That is hella crazy for stars to be doing this even if Paul Wall has dropped off the scene.

HOUSTON – Big budgets and bulky cameras may soon be a thing of the past if one Houston rapper has his way.

He’s the first major artist to make his music video with a cell phone. That rapper is Paul Wall. And tilted on a tripod is the camera he will be using to shoot his music video in Houston and Los Angeles.

“It’s a great way for me to promote my album,” Wall says.

He’s using the iPhone to shoot the entire video.

“We don’t have to rent anything because basically everybody in the crew has a cell phone so that cuts down your cost right there and you can download it to the computer after words,” Director Amir Vilinia says.

Wall says he’s not nervous about the experience.

“If we do it this will be groundbreaking video right here and if not we’re all having fun, so it’s all good,” Wall said.

Ron Finberg is the producer, the money man behind the project. He says it makes good economic sense to use the cell phone technology.

“We don’t have to rent anything because basically everybody in the crew has a cell phone so that cuts down your cost right there and you can download it to the computer after words.”

That means Wall’s latest video could be on your laptop in about weeks.
