A Look At the iPhone 3GS, From Multiple Sources.

July 17, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The 3GS has been out for a while, and I’m sure many of you have considered purchasing it. With the new compass, 3.0 megapixel camera, twice the speed,  and a 32GB option, it’s hard to resist. For those of you who are trying to find out more about the new iPhone 3GS, Apple’s technical specifications might not be as specific and detail-oriented as needed. Lucky for you, there are plenty of people out there who have taken the time to say a thing or two about iPhone 3GS.

When it comes to third-party reviews of Apple products, you tend to find out things you never would have realized if you only browsed Apple.com. Even though it appears that the iPhone 3GS is pretty much the same as the 3G, there is more to it than meets the eye. Jason at Gizmodo brought the difference between the 3G’s and 3GS’s camera to my attention when he shared a few pictures (above) taken from each iPhone. The quality of the 3GS’s photo far exceeds the 3G’s. This is due to the 3GS’s new tap-to-focus feature combined with the 3.0 megapixel camera as opposed to the 2.0 megapixel camera the 3G has. Man sues Apple, FBI over mafia-‘bugged’ iPod conspiracy

July 17, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

I swear the people who come up with these stories need to just chill out, it isn’t unheard of that apple is getting sued yet again but this is by far one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. First off the Mafia+Apple working together, umm no. I would think any mafia branch wouldn’t be worried about bugging an ipod to get to a man, im pretty sure if the mafia wants you, the mafia gets you . Check out the story below which is completely redundous but hey it is entertaining ;)

Apple has been sued by a Beverly Hills, CA man, who accuses the company of conspiring with the mafia to track him and his activities in secret. According to the complaint, Gregory McKenna believes his bedroom, living room, upstairs bathroom, and Toyota Camry, along with an iPod shuffle he purchased from eBay and an iPod mini he purchased in an Apple Store, all contained receivers that allowed the mafia to transmit threats to him and follow his whereabouts. McKenna claims that recordings of mafia members saying “I’m going to kill him” played in unison with a song on his iPod mini in 2008, Read more…

D.C. police chief doesn’t want you to use iPhone Apps to detect traffic cameras

July 17, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The Washington D.C. police chief, Cathy Lanier, has chided people who use radar-detecting technology, including iPhone applications, for their “cowardly tactic.” With apps such as EyeWiki, people are able to flag known locations of traffic cameras using GPS. Then, as you approach a flagged camera, the app rings out, “Hey, slow down! There’s a traffic camera nearby.” Police say using such technology could endanger lives, but that doesn’t quite make sense.
The argument is that by using radar-detecting technology, which is illegal in D.C. and Virginia (so this whole post is moot, but whatever), you could be putting lives in danger. So argues the police. Keep in mind that traffic cameras and whatnot generated nearly $1 billion from 2005 to 2008. If everyone is driving around with technology that defeats said cameras, the police will have quite a hole in the budget.
But the idea that using the tech, in and of itself, puts people’s lives in danger is hard to believe. The cameras serve as a deterrent: drive the speed limit or be prepared to whip out your checkbook. So you drive the speed limit, which, I would imagine, lowers traffic-related fatalities. But let’s say you have an App that marks the location of cameras. You’re still going to slow down near the traffic camera, it’s just that the police won’t get any of your money that way.
Unless the police is trying to argue that people will drive reckless all over the place except when near a traffic camera. That, I guess, could be valid. In that case, people are still driving unsafely, except when they know they’re approaching a camera, but now the police has less money to fight crime.
Solution: let’s ban cars.

DEV team takes a Stab at GEO and Releases UltraSn0w .09

July 17, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

If you follow Geo-Hot and some of the Dev Team on twitter then you already know that on a daily basis they exchange words to each other indirectly.

Well apparently that time is Over and Its now blatant responses and answers are now the future.

What does this mean for the rest of us?

It means detailed information about whats going on inside our phones and why.

UltraSn0w .09 is OUT

Read below to find out the details from the DEV-TEAM blog:

Winter Tires

Short version:
ultrasn0w version 0.9 is out! We believe it solves pretty much all of the various issues that have been reported. Its features include:

  • Works on both 3G and 3GS
  • Works on hacktivated devices
  • Doesn’t patch any mach-o binary whatsoever (thanks to MobileSubstrate)
  • Works regardless of how you jailbroke your device
  • Doesn’t install any additional daemon
  • Has no race conditions, no popups about “Missing SIM”, no network issues
  • Is almost 7000 times smaller than the nearest competition
  • Is available now via Cydia.

Long version:
The day before yesterday, some fellow named geohot released a program called “purplesn0w” which claims to be a better unlock than our ultrasn0w solution. He was kind enough to provide source, which we naturally took apart to try to validate his claims. ;) Read more…

IPCC Tethering Hack Blocked on iPhone OS 3.1b2

July 16, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Apple has blocked the IPCC tethering hack used to activate iPhone tethering on the AT&T network, according to a TUAW report.

TUAW has learned that, with the release of iPhone OS 3.1 beta 2, tethering via the IPCC hack no longer works for AT&T customers. While iPhone OS 3.0 provides support for tethering, AT&T has yet to officially support it. As a workaround to obtain tethering (as well as MMS for some), some users have modified their carrier files (IPCC). As of 3.1 beta 2, this no longer works.

Those who need tethering may want to avoid the 3.1 update when it becomes available.

Windows 95 Running on iPhone

July 15, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

It seems as if the iSoft team which developed quicksms and such apps for the iPhone, have hacked the iphone to run windows 95 using Bochs emulator and the original win 95 image. As you can see the emulation speed is very slow, but it’s a start. The iSoft team is also working on booting xp on the iPhone and hopefully they can get a 3G S so we can see the true power of the newest Apple iPhone.

Geo Hot’s PurpleSn0w Unlock

July 15, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Geo Hot has released purplesn0w which is an iphone 3G S carrier unlock. This Purplesn0w unlock is suppose to help people having wifi, signal, and battery issues using the Dev-Teams Ultrasn0w unlock. It seems to me we have a little team battle here.. I like to see competition as this will drive the teams to better them selves and release more stable software solutions for the iphone community. Here is an excerpt from Geo Hot’s blog about his software based unlock solution:

“purplesn0w technicals

About a year ago today, I found the at+stkprof exploit. Back then, I struggled for 3 days to write a payload. No luck, I just wasn’t a good enough reverser. So I stashed the exploit away until December, when I gave it to dev for use in yellowsn0w.
Now a year later, I wrote a payload and delivery system in a day. And it’s an awesome payload. Ideally we’d like to patch the lock out of flash, but with the apparently proper sig checks, that isn’t going to happen. So purplesn0w is the next best thing. I copy the page I want to patch to an unused region of memory. In memory I patch it. Read more…

Geo Hot Makes It Sn0w

July 15, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Wifi fails? Battery fails? Unlock fails? You need purplesn0w, the geohot 3GS unlock solution. Now I know you here a lot about different colors of sn0w, but I’m here to tell you why purplesn0w is the best. First off, what is purplesn0w? It’s a soft unlock for your 3GS that I’d actually use day to day. It’s not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn’t add a task to your baseband. It’s very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist(which you need, activate w at&t sim first, no hacktivation support yet). That’s it, no other files are installed. Props to Oranav for the at+xlog exploit!
A full explanation is coming soon, but I think you clever reversers out there will see what it does, and see why it’s so pristine :-) The payload is radically different from other varieties of sn0w. beta as usual, back up first.

Be sure to have legit activated 3GS
Disable 3G if you don’t have it(like T-Mobile).
Add apt.geohot.com to Cydia
Install com.geohot.purplesn0w
Watch for success output in Cydia
Reboot, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone
