We’ve all seen the potential havoc that an iPod can wreak — either through misuse or some general explosiveness — and it looks like we now might have yet another cautionary tale out of Sweden, where a Saab 9-3 recently met an unfortunate end. While the exact, official cause of the blaze hasn’t quite been pegged down, investigators seem to strongly suspect that an iPod left in the car is to blame. That’s apparently because the car itself showed no signs of negligence or other technical faults (or evidence that the fire was intentionally set), and because the fire started on the seats, where the iPod was seemingly left. What’s not clear, however, is if the iPod was simply tossed there and caught fire all by itself, or if was charging when things went horribly wrong — although we’re personally willing to simply buy Google Translate’s answer that “the music has become so hot that it melted the inside.”

It’s getting to be the ‘in’ thing for Colleges and Universities. The University of Florida at Gainesville is now requiring incoming pharmacy students for the fall semester to have either an iPhone or an iPod touch.
The student Newspaper, the Alligator, quotes the College of Pharmacy Dean William Riffee saying:
“These are the instruments at the forefront that are developing applications for medical uses by the hundreds. We want our students to become adept at using these mobile devices early on because we see this as the future in pharmacy practice.”
The Dean also owns an iPhone so he knows of what he speaks.
In May, the University of Missouri School of Journalism also required the popular Apple devices, saying they would be helpful for recording lectures and other academic uses.
This is obviously a good thing for Apple, and the University thinks it is a good thing for students. It’s not so good, however, if you already own a Zune.

I must say that this runs beautifully on the iPhone 3G S, this is the deal breaker
Download links for deb file below: Links removed as I do realize that zodttd works hard and has given us so much more on our iphones, he is one of the reasons we jailbreak. Everyone if you like the app then go buy it and if you can’t even do that as some people are cheap then donate a dollar or two. Im sorry if this makes some of my readers mad but I like to think of myself as a respectable person, especially if the man comes and comments on my site.
Note: You have to ssh into your iphone or use diskaid and such to do this.

TiveriasApps has announced GPush, an iPhone application which will provide push notifications for Gmail.
GPush is the missing link between GMail and the iPhone. For the first time, using GPush, iPhone users will be able to receive their GMail new message notification instantly and no longer have to wait up to an hour to be notified of new email.
Features:
- Instantly receive Gmail new message notifications on the iPhone
- Set it and Forget it: All you have to do is download the app and decide how you want to be notified of new email. You never have to open the app again after that.
- Improved battery life: GPush uses less battery since it relies on push notifications rather than data fetching (“pulling”)
- Ability to see emails on the standby screen just like text messages
- SSL Security Certificate used to ensure password security for GPush users
GPush has been submitted to the App Store for review. If it is accepted it will be available for $.99.

Apple’s third generation iPod touch seems to be going out for a little web-based test drive. Designated iPod touch 3,1, we first saw code hints of it in the iPhone 3.0 beta firmware, and then in rumors about the iPod touch getting a camera. Now, according to app analytics provider PinchMedia:
we’ve been noticing an “iPod 3,1″ string appearing in our version reporting, signifying what we believe to be a new yet-to-be-released version of the iPod Touch.
For the last two years, Apple has reveled new iPod touch models during their fall music-focused events. Last year, the second generation iPod touch debuted at Let’s Rock alongside iPhone 2.1, and iTunes 8.
Since Apple likes their product cycles, does this mean we’ll see iPod touch 3,1 and iPhone 3.1 sometime this September?

A number of iPhone 3GS owners have reported slow and inconsistent data speeds, along with widely varying amounts of signal strength, when using Wi-Fi.
Users note that signal strength can fluctuate between one and full bars even when standing right next to the router or when a computer nearby shows a constant signal. This goes along with a commensurate reduction in speed. Even at full signal on both the computer and the 3GS, one user reports getting a maximum of 3Mbit downloads on the iPhone while getting nearly 7Mbit downloads on a MacBook using the O2 network. The fluctuating signal strength problem has affected me since I brought home my new iPhone 3GS.
The other, more widely reported problem is a sizable speed decrease in the iPhone 3GS as compared to the iPod touch and iPhone 3G tested under the same conditions. In one case an iPod touch garnered download speeds of 4579ms and uploads of 1363ms, while the iPhone 3GS showed only 1360ms down and 160ms up.
Both problems seem to be more acute using an Airport Extreme/Time Capsule network than a third party solution. For one user, running the same speed test, a Netgear router provided twice the transfer speed and half the latency of an Airport Extreme.
Apple has addressed some user complaints with replacement units. This, however, hasn’t solved the problem, even after one person replaced his phone three times. A non-verifiable source has suggested that this has not been corrected in the beta builds of the upcoming 3.1 software.
Most widely reported is the difference in transfer speeds between the 3G and the 3GS.
Michael Krasner has been following this and uploading movies documenting the differences. In his video he is using AT&T DSL in Florida and his Airport Extreme’s radio mode is set to 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) with two Airport Express’ extending his network.

UltraSn0w
There is an update to ultrasn0w, iPhone software unlock, to version 0.8. This version of ultrasn0w is said to work on the iPhone 3GS according to MuscleNerd, a Dev-Team member. Things to Note:
• “Ultrasn0W 0.8 (incl. 3GS support) (see Cydia).”
• “ultrasn0w is now 3GS friendly! First cross-platform carrier unlock, thanks partly to Apple Repo details at http://is.gd/1pRGL.”
• “The main 3GS ultrasn0w glitch on hacktivated devices is: need to do Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network settings once.”
• “If ultrasn0w already works for you, 0.8 won’t add anything new. This 0.8 is mostly for 3GS users or 3G outliers.”
There isn’t an official post on the Dev-Team’s website about this one. To get the jailbreak just go HERE and download the jailbreak that you need.
RedSn0w
With the release of ultrsn0w 0.8, a software unlock, the Dev-Team has also updated redsn0w, Dev-Team’s jailbreak, to version 0.8. The updated version of redsn0w will jailbreak the iPhone 3GS, hactivated devices and includes a Linux version of the jailbreak.
