At last Apple has begun distributing invitations to a press event scheduled for September 9th. The image on the invitation, which features a classic silhouette dancer, pretty much confirms our suspicion that this particular dog-and-pony show feature the iPod (now with cameras! …maybe). Apple typically introduces new iPods in September.

This year’s event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on September 9th at 10:00 a.m Pacific time. Perhaps then we’ll see that secret television ad. In any case, we think it’s safe for the pro-tablet theorists sit this one out. Maybe next time, folks.

uMonitor is a uTorrent client app for iPhone and iPod touch which lets you monitor your torrent files being downloaded through uTorrent on a Windows PC or a Mac.

uMonitor makes use of uTorrent’s Web UI to show the live progress of your current torrent downloads. µMonitor is not available on the App Store because Apple rejected it as they do not want any ‘torrent’ application on the iPhone, therefore you will need a jailbroken iPhone to install uMonitor from Cydia. Complete step by step instructions for jailbreaking iPhone and iPod touch can be found here. Once you have jailbroken your iPhone, goto Cydia and add “http://repo.theiphonebay.org” as shown in the screenshots below:

After being held up and robbed, a MobileMe user managed to lead police to the location of the robbers using Find My iPhone, reports the Pittsburgh Post.

The unidentified victim was approached by two individuals at about 1am. One of them showed him what appeared to be a gun and they demanded his wallet and his credit card PIN numbers.

After handing over his iPhone and wallet the thieves let him run off at which point he was able to call the police. The man later used Find My iPhone to track the location of his iPhone to a Wal-Mart in North Versailles. He was able to help the police follow the individuals from the Wal-Mart to a gas station where they were finally apprehended.

Police said they recovered a black pellet gun, as well as stolen identification, credit cards and cash. They will charge Bryant Rather, 22, of West Mifflin, Brent Ray Potter, 22, of Swissvale, and Myron Knox, Jr., 22, of Homewood, with two counts each of access device fraud, conspiracy, receiving stolen property and possessing instruments of crime. Mr. Rather and Mr. Potter will also be charged with robbery.

If you’re looking to own a current-generation iPod, you best buy one before they’re gone. Ars Technica notes that vendors inside Apple’s Authorized Reseller network are reporting that dwindling stocks aren’t being met with new shipments, lending further credence to the presumption that September’s press event will be about new iPods. 

Apple typically introduces new iPods in September, just in time for back-to-school shopping. We’ve heard rumors that the whole line will get cameras, including the Classic. With 120GB of storage, that thing could hold a lot of photos. It’s also quite likely that there will be a storage boost, but if the shuffle gets any smaller it’ll simply cease to exist.

Personally, this just means I’ll have another opportunity to call my fat nano an ancient artifact.

Dev team has released a statement about their jailbreaking tools running on the newly released Snow Leopard update for mac. Below is what they had to say:

” Snow Leopard, the OS released for Mac on Friday, poses no new wrinkles for the redsn0w jailbreak or ultrsn0w unlock.

To summarize the status of our tools (all of which are available through the links at the left):

• You can use redsn0w to jailbreak any iPhone or iPod Touch using OS X, Windows, or Linux.  For both 3.0 and 3.0.1 firmwares, you should point redsn0w at the 3.0 IPSW.  If you see it hang at “waiting for reboot”, just unplug and replug that USB cable.
• You can use ultrasn0w to unlock the iPhone 3G/3GS, or BootNeuter to unlock the iPhone 2G.  Both ultrasn0w and BootNeuter are available via Cydia.
• You can use PwnageTool for Mac to create custom IPSWs with pre-installed packages.
• For detailed guides on how to run any of these tools, sites like iClarified have some great tutorials.  For specific help on any problems, feel free to use our comment system below.  angiepangie and Confucious are your friendly moderators and they’re joined by a number of other very knowledgeable commenters too!

Reports of iPhones exploding, starting fires and killing people in cold blood have been around since the inception of the handset. They’ve also been relatively sporadic, seemingly short on evidence, and Apple hasn’t given complaints much credence or response. An AT&T insider has confirmed to an iPhone-focused website that Apple is shipping OS 3.1 software update for iPhone and iPod touch in September. The event will also be marked by the enabling of MMS support from the American carrier.

According to people familiar with AT&T’s plans, the mobile services operator will start supporting the multimedia messaging service beginning next month, a report over at funkyspacemonkey.com reveals. Reportedly, an insider emailed the website two weeks ago with news that the carrier was to start support for iPhone MMS in September. Moreover, the report also mentions the “iPhone OS 3.1” software update, whose release is pinned down for the same September time frame.

Currently, the iPhone lacks a number of features – has them locked it’s what it is, really – including Bluetooth file transfer, Internet tethering, and others. While Apple hasn’t even hinted at the release of iPhone OS 3.1, it is fair to assume that we’re not dealing with a simple rumor. Major revisions to the iPhone OS are released on a regular basis, on short intervals of time. Additionally, Apple is said to be preparing for a keynote event next month, around September 8 more precisely. This is when Apple usually hosts its iPod event, while an iPhone announcement would not be ruining any trends, Softpedia believes.

Most industry watchers, analysts and people commenting on Apple’s actions agree that the company is most likely developing some kind of a tablet device. Some believe it will be showcased at next-month’s event (which also remains to be confirmed), others claim it will not be unveiled until much later, with the release occurring sometime in 2010. The device would run a stripped-down version of the Mac OS, yet the piece of software would be much more advanced than the current iPhone OS. All these remain to be confirmed.
