Want a Legit Unlocked iPhone 3GS 32GB? Got $999

August 04, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Buy.com is offering the iPhone 3GS at 32GB “Never-Locked LEGALLY Unlocked” for “>$999. You can also get the iPhone 3G at 16GB for $849.
While seller DB Electronics doesn’t source the gear, we can only guess they’re picking them up somewhere Apple sells unlocked iPhones (like Hong Kong) and reselling them here (if someone knows better, drop us a correction in the comments).
What that means for manufacturers warranties and/or Apple Care, well, we don’t fancy the plane ride. If you don’t either, make sure you establish how the reseller will be covering exchanges/repairs for you.

Report: Netflix streaming video headed to iPhone

August 04, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Citing an unnamed source described as “an industry executive familiar with Netflix’s plans,” an industry trade journal is claiming that Netflix will soon offer its Watch Instantly streaming video service on the iPhone, iPod touch and the Nintendo Wii.

The brief report by Multichannel News describes the move as the next step for Netflix’ content, which currently streams to Windows PCs, Macs, the Xbox 360, TiVo DVRs, the Roku, and certain TV and Blu-Ray players built to support video downloads.

Netflix Watch Instantly vs iTunes
Unlike Netflix’ DVDs-by-mail service, its Watch Instantly library offers much less variety, with limited popular content such as recent movies and TV series. Its older titles and oddball independent films are available for immediate viewing however. The Watch Instantly service is also included for viewing at no extra cost over the base Netflix subscription, in contrast to iTunes’ pay per view pricing.

Unlike media purchased or rented from iTunes, Netflix’ streaming content plays back directly with no download. That requires no local storage on the playback device, but results in playback quality that is dependent upon the available network bandwidth. With iTunes and the Apple TV, content is progressively downloaded, enabling users to obtain HD content even with a slower connection, albeit with a longer wait. Read more…

Microsoft tries to get iPhone developers to port their apps to Windows Mobile

August 03, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Maybe it is desperation time…or, perhaps Microsoft is trying to capitalize on all of the negative energy surrounding the App Store lately with the Google Voice and Google Latitude shuttering.  Redmond has put together a case study on porting an iPhone App to Windows and are showing it off to other application developers in the hopes of attracting the legions of programmers who have flocked to the iPhone and its development environment.

The application in question is called Amplitude (iTunes link) and is described as:

Amplitude is a fun application that enables users to amplify sound from their surroundings. With real-time graphical representation of sound picked up by the microphone, Amplitude users can adjust the volume/gain on their microphones to amplify sounds, such as animal heartbeats, environmental sounds, distant bird calls, tiny sounds from mechanical devices, and a host of other sounds that might otherwise go unnoticed.

So this App takes sound in from the mic port and puts it though to the headphones with an equalizer.  We’re not professional programmers but that doesn’t sound like rocket science, more like something that would take a professional programmer a few hours to build from scratch.  Porting using this complex process would probably take longer…and since it is so Read more…

iPhone Dev Team Application

August 03, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

An iPhone Dev Team Application has been released in Cydia. The application allows you to view the Dev-Team’s website, twitter account and torrents right in the application. It is an easy way to stay up-to-date on the Dev-Team. I did notice that the Torrents option doesn’t seem to work but, the other two options (Blog and Twitter) do. You can get iPhone Dev Team via the BigBoss source.

Apple accused of gagging order over exploding iPod touch

August 03, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Apple finds itself in a spot of PR bother over exploding iPod touch:

Apple has attempted to silence a disgruntled British customer whose iPod touch exploded, offering them a refund only on the condition that they would not go public about the matter.
Well, that plan seems to have backfired rather badly, according to a report in The Times, that claims the customer was unhappy about being offered such a ’settlement’ from Apple UK.
Gagging order
“Apple attempted to silence a father and daughter with a gagging order after the child’s iPod music player exploded and the family sought a refund from the company,” reports The Times.
The report continued, noting that Apple “would offer the family a full refund only if they were willing to sign a settlement form. The proposed agreement left them Read more…

MMS will be Enabled for AT&T’s iPhone Customers in iPhone OS 3.1

August 03, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

AT&T

was strangely absent in the list of carriers supporting MMS and tethering – two new features introduced in iPhone OS 3.0. This had quite rightly caused widespread uproar from AT&T’s iPhone customers.

We might have some good news as we just got a tip from one of our readers, Marvin that the MMS feature will be enabled in iPhone OS 3.1 for AT&T customers. He got this information from a top AT&T technician who wants to be anonymous.

AT&T has maintained that MMS support will be available later this summer.

We haven’t been able to confirm this from any other source but the latest tip seems to be in line with the information we are getting from the iPhone app developers

who have already Read more…

Apple Adds Que Time, Contact Info To iPhone Dev Pages

August 02, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Small steps: reports from several iPhone developers indicate that Apple has showcased two key features on the Dev Center website that may improve the mood and attitude of anxious app submitters.

Feature #1 is a queue status graphic (seen here), letting everyone know how long the approval wait should be — like the line signs at Walt Disney World, only far geekier.

Feature #2 is the presence of a new ‘all issues’ escalation email address, so developers with urgent bug fixes that need to be prioritized can get their questions answered — something that the Iconfactory’s Craig Hockenberry specifically asked for in his wrapup of the 1st-anniversary state of the store. This email channel has apparently been open for a week or two, but is now being publicized on the front page.

Several other tips & suggestions posts have also been updated in the past 24 hours, including notes on the keywording/tagging options and walkthroughs on changing your app name and assigning/adjusting the app’s rating. If you’re a registered developer, swing over to the Dev Center and take a look.
