Study shows steady decline in AT&T brand perception

September 12, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Since the launch of the iPhone 3GS, public perception of AT&T has progressively decreased, while opinions about competitor Verizon Wireless remained relatively unchanged, a new study shows.

In a daily survey of 5,000 people 18 and older, YouGov’s BrandIndex tracks companies based on factors of quality, value, satisfaction, recommendation, reputation and impression. When combining those categories, AT&T’s index score of 18.3 on June 16 had eroded to a 14.6 on Thursday — a change company senior vice president Ted Marzilli told AppleInsider is “statistically significant.”

He said the survey could indicate that some people may pause before they buy an iPhone because they don’t want to be locked into an AT&T contract. Though he believes the contract between AT&T and Apple has likely been beneficial to both parties for the last two years, the timing of AT&T’s public perception decline suggests the issue can be traced to the launch of the iPhone 3GS — or, more specifically, the network’s inability to meet the bandwidth needs of users with the device.

“It may be hindering iPhone adoption at this point,” Marzilli said, “and Read more…

Apple Still Planning Camera in iPod Touch?

September 12, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Another interesting possibility found in iFixit’s teardown of the third-generation iPod touch was an empty space on the circuit board that could house a camera. The location is consistent with the location of the rumored iPod touch camera and is distinct from the previous-generation iPod touch design.

Pictured above is the second-generation iPod touch on the left and the third-generation iPod touch on the right. The round metal piece seen in the middle of the second-generation iPod touch board is actually an antenna cable socket which has been moved on the third-generation model, which only has a black plastic spacer in that place. According to iFixit, an iPod-nano style camera would fit in that location.

The finding is also consistent with a report from AppleInsider which claimed that the iPod touch with camera was a real product but had been scrapped about a month ago. The rumor site also believes that Apple is still planning on adding camera capabilities to the iPod touch in the near future.

3G S Users Say No To RockYourPhone 2

September 11, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Rockyourphone

RockYourPhone has released their v2 client. Now, I have not looked at this client yet. Let me state that I am not bashing rock your phone and have not made a determination yet whether or not it is great or terrible. What I can tell you is that if you are on a 3gs you should not install this until a 3.1 jailbreak is released.

As I already posted, the 3gs can no longer be restored to 3.0 or 3.0.1 anymore. If you update to 3.1 on your 3gs you may never be able to jailbreak again.

Rock your phone installs its own extensions and modifies a lot of system files. It is not installing just “an app”. They replace mobile substrate with their own version and the two may or may not work well side by side. Some thumb C function injection is likely to be broken. In normal cases, a simple restore would solve whatever issues you run into, but as things stand, you cant restore. So again, a very strong warning. If you are on a 3gs, do not install RYP2 at this time. If you want to test it, use a 2g, 3g, or wait for 3.1 jailbreak.

Note: this warning also applies to other software, but most stuff in cydia community sources can be repaired fairly easily without a restore using SSH.

3G S Users Cannot Restore To 3.0, 3.1 Is Still Vulnerable

September 10, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

So as of today, Apple has stopped signing 3.0 and 3.0.1 restore files. That means that if you have a 3GS iPhone you cannot restore any firmware other than 3.1. If you are happily jailbroken today and something goes wrong you are pretty much screwed.  Here is a summary:

1) If you have an iPhone 3g or 2g, you are fine and should be able to restore.

2) If you have a 3gs, you can only restore 3.1 (and kiss your jailbreak good bye). If you did not get an IBSS/IBEC signature before now and you restore, you may never be able to jailbreak again.

3) If you have an iPhone 3GS and you used Cydia to save your TSS or did purplera1n or similar a while back and saved your IBEC, then you will be able to restore in the near future, but you must wait for someone smart to write a utility that will let you do it.  Chances are good that such a utility will come out in a couple days. If you can be patient and wait, do so. No one wrote this utility prior to this because we were not sure if Apple would actually stop signing 3.0 – only that they *could*.

It looks like an exploit has already been found in 3.1 firmware so it sounds like a jailbreak will be possible, but again, hold out for a bit.

3.1 Still Vulnerable

Steve Jobs Talks About The New iPods

September 10, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

In a new interview, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs discusses a number of issues, including the new lineup of iPods, the Amazon Kindle, and his own health and weight.

Jobs spoke with David Pogue of The New York Times, and explained that the iPod touch, unlike the iPod nano, was not given a camera because the company wanted to focus on portraying the device as a gaming machine. Jobs said that the company’s main goal was to lower the price of the iPod touch as much as possible, and he believes it achieved that with a 8GB model for $199.

“What customers told us was, they started to see it as a game machine,” Jobs said. “We started to market it that way, and it just took off. And now what we really see is it’s the lowest-cost way to the App Store, and that’s the big draw. So what we were focused on is just reducing the price to $199. We don’t need to add new stuff. We need to get the price down where everyone can afford it.”

Third-party cases with camera holes and even photos and video of an alleged prototype of a third-generation iPod touch with camera existed well before Wednesday’s event, leading many to assume such a product would be announced. While Jobs said the reason was intentional, AppleInsider received word earlier this week that the camera was removed due to bad hardware.

The chief executive went on to explain that the iPod nano can record video, but cannot take still pictures, because the sensors required for pictures are too thick to fit into the .02-inch thick device. Read more…

iPod Nano Gets A Camera

September 10, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

As well-documented by the “word on the street,” the fifth generation iPod nano is also a video camera…and radio and a pedometer and a voice recorder too…and it’s available today. Details:

• Video camera (640×480)
• Integrated mic
• Integrated speaker
• FM Radio!!!!!
• One-click YouTube uploads
• Voice Over like Shuffle
• Pedometer with Nike+ syncing online
• Voice Recorder
• 2.2-inch screen is possibly larger than last model

Starting today, the 8GB nano will cost $150 while the 16GB comes in at $180. (So why buy the 8?) What’s the biggest surprise here? The camera we knew about. But the radio? The video support? I do have to admit, if it’s this or a Flip, the nano is certainly more tempting.
