What’s Spirit?
- Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the latest firmwares.
- Spirit is not a carrier unlock.
- If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore to use Spirit. Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. (You can, however, restore to 3.1.2 if you have SHSH blobs for that version.)
Requirements
- Any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2.
- An activated device: one not stuck on the Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen.
- Any version of iTunes 9 (including 9.1.1).
- Syncing with iTunes before trying this highly recommended.
Note: On iPad, all this is still sort of beta. Some packages in Cydia, not designed for iPad, might screw up your system and require you to restore. Be careful. (And no, Cydia’s appearance is not final.)
Other Stuff
- Troubleshooting: If you’re getting error code c0000005, apparently setting compatibility mode to Windows 98 allows Spirit to work.
- Legal information.
- If you liked this jailbreak, I greatly appreciate donations:
- Source code will be available after the inevitable update.
- For troubleshooting purposes, here is a little program to read the syslog (which the spirit installer writes a bunch of stuff to). If you don’t know what this means, don’t bother.
- Thanks to BigBoss, chpwn, chronic, MuscleNerd, OPK, planetbeing, pod2g, posixninja, saurik, westbaer, and anyone else whose name I have forgotten, for various contributions.
- Plus, special thanks to everyone who donated to me in the past.

I’ve been waiting for this and it’s definitely worth the wait. Thank you to all the amazing developers!!!
I did encounter an error on my first try, it was stuck on the Spirit logo with the wheel turning endlessly. I reset the phone and it stayed on the apple logo (I really thought I bricked my phone then). I tried to restore and it put my phone on recovery mode but however failed to restore. So I downloaded the restore ipsw from this wonderful website and did restore which worked perfectly. I used the Spirit app and it JB’d my 3GS instantly!!! – Whew! It only took a few seconds, I swear. Now I’m back to enjoying the freedom of 3rd party apps! Hail to the developers!

May 3rd, 2010 at 12:10 pm
Yes works with all idevices on the latest firmware be careful though if you depend on an unlock do not update your iphone if your jalbroken already, as they say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

May 3rd, 2010 at 4:45 pm
Hey wat about 1st Gen iphones ? will it unlock them or just jailbreak ?
May 3rd, 2010 at 4:54 pm
Yes just restore fresh to the latest 3.1.3 firmware and then run spirit. Don’t forget that if you depend on an unlock to use your phone do not update as you will lose your baseband unlock.

Have you updated to the latest 9.1-1 version. You can also try to reboot your itunes and try a different usb port. Another is reinstalling itunes and rebooting computer then trying.

After I jailbroke my iPad and ran Cydia the home screen looks funny, I loaded respring to fix the problem but every time that I have to reboot the iPad the screen go back to crazy again and I have to run respring to fix it. I can’t even put my icons the way I want because if I have to reboot they get all moved around. Is it normal to have to run respring every time after reboot. Any help would be greatful. Just want to make sure that all is good and that this is normal and others are having to deal with this..
May 7th, 2010 at 2:22 pm
What I read around was that a simple reboot would fix the problems your having.
May 8th, 2010 at 2:54 am
anyone has the problem that the phone after jailbroken with Spirit, the battery eats up very fast?
May 8th, 2010 at 10:06 am
Alice if your battery is getting drained quickly try hard rebooting, that may help your problem.
May 8th, 2010 at 10:15 am
but what if it happens everytime till now since the day i did this jailbreak? i have to do hard rebooting everytime it happens??
May 8th, 2010 at 2:09 pm
No after rebooting your battery drain issues should go away. If you feel bothered by it you can restore your iPhone or whatever you have and rejailbreak as it could just something in your iPhone filesystem that’s causing the drain so wiping it clean and starting fresh will help
May 8th, 2010 at 8:38 pm
ok taken note of that, thanks!

After jailbreak, no camera icon, and no camera apps will work.
June 13th, 2010 at 9:41 pm
Try rebooting that might fix it.
