I never understand why the upfront cost is such a big factor in smartphone purchases.  That $100 you save on the iPhone 3G vs. the 3GS is probably the same as your monthly bill (that you pay 24 times over) and you have to live with a previous generation iPhone for two years!  Dumb.

With that in mind, on the eve (OK, not really) of a new iPhone release Walmart announced that it was cutting the price of its iPhone 3GS to $97 with a two year plan this week.  Formerly, the 8GB iPhone 3G occupied this price point, but those look to be running out of stock. Read more…

Morgan Stanley expects Apple to drop the price of the iPhone 3GS to $99 once the new iPhone is released next month, according to Fortune.

Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty raised her Apple price target to $310 per share saying that investors continue to underestimate iPhone share gains, better-than-expected iPad demand, the growing Chinese market, and increased penetration of the corporate market. Read more…

A video comparing the speed of the Google Nexus One web browser in Froyo (which supports Flash 10.1 beta) vs. the iPhone 3GS and the HD2, has been posted by PocketNow.

According to Google, the web browser in Froyo beats every other mobile browser available right now. That’s a lofty claim, and in this video, we put Froyo up against Safari on the iPhone and Opera Mobile 10 on the HD2. The results? You’ll have to view the video to find out!

Apple has reportedly stopped shipping the iPhone 3G 8GB units to AT&T stores, according to the BGR.

A move that is sure to surprise few, we suppose. We’ve heard that Apple has stopped shipping iPhone 3G 8GB units to AT&T stores and orders are not being placed for the device. Could this mean we might see the iPhone 3GS drop to $99 and make way for a new model? Or maybe the 3GS would disappear altogether? We’re not sure, but we’re about to find out…

A recent report by Morgan Stanley also expects Apple to drop the iPhone 3GS price to $99 once the next generation device is released.

A couple screenshots of the firmware used to field test video calling have been posted online by BGR. Unfortunately, the screenshots don’t show the actually video calling interface; however, if authentic they do provide more evidence of the feature.

Like we need any more proof, right? Even so, the more confirmation the better we say, and one of our Apple guys has sent us in some shots of the field test firmware for the new iPhone HD (or whatever it is), and we’ve got them right here for you. They are pretty self explanatory, and there is one more after the break!

I was just about to go to sleep when we got an email from one of FSM’s readers, Stefano, telling us about iPhodroid and easy automated way to install Android OS on your iPhone 2G and 3G. Some of you are familiar with Bump for the iPhone, and i know some of you love this app. If you are not familiar with Bump, the app will let you share your contact information and up to 4 extra contacts with other iPhones just by “bumping” them.
