The iPhone Dev-Team has released the iOS 4.0 jailbreak for the iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (non MC).
redsn0w beta has been updated to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G (in addition to jailbreaking the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G).

I can’t update to iOS 4.0 on my iPod touch 2G (MB). It goes into a recovery loop? Do you know of a fix?

Would this require updating iTunes to 9.2 and breaking iPad Spirit jailbreak?

It will break the spirit program used to jailbreak idevices but if your device is already jailbroken it would have no effect on it. Yes it would require you to update.
