Ford Plans To Turn Vehicles Into Rolling WiFi Hotspots

Ford plans to turn vehicles into rolling WiFi hot spots when it introduces the second generation of its SYNC in-car connectivity system next year.

Inserting an owner’s compatible USB mobile broadband modem – sometimes called an “air card” – into SYNC’s USB port will produce a secure wireless connection that will be broadcast throughout the vehicle, allowing passengers with WiFi-enabled mobile devices to access the Internet anywhere the broadband modem receives connectivity.

iPhone Developer Tapulous Captures Sales of Nearly $1 Million Per Month

December 21, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Reuters reports on iPhone developer Tapulous, the team behind the popular Tap Tap Revenge applications, noting that the small company is reportedly bringing in nearly $1 million per month in revenue. The success of Tapulous, which boasts only 20 employees, illustrates the ability of small development firms dedicated to the iPhone to carve out profitable niches for themselves in the App Store.

Tapulous — with a mere 20 employees — said its “Tap Tap Revenge” game series has now been installed more than 20 million times, with more than 600 million total games played.

Google phone to challenge iPhone by “making calls”

December 20, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Saturday Night Live’s ‘Weekend Update’ with Seth Meyers joined the fray of people who were sick of AT&T’s poor network reception:

“It was reported this week that Google would soon launch its own cellphone as a challenge to the iPhone. Also a challenge to the iPhone? Making phone calls.”

While Saturday Night Live hasn’t been funny for years (IMHO), and the joke was rather feeble, this is further cause for embarrassment from Apple and AT&T and just additional fodder for Verizon’s case as to why they should have the iPhone.

ZodTTD Demos Progress on N64 for iPhone

December 19, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

ZodTTD has posted a video demonstration of his progress on the emulator port, n64iphone.

It is a port of mupen64plus along with Ari64’s ARM Dynarec, and Adventus / Orkin’s OpenGLES GPU. Since the graphics processing unit (GPU) code is written with the OpenGL ES 2.0 specification, it limits the devices able to be used to the iPhone 3gs and iPod Touch 3rd Gen as of the current Apple lineup.

Still Needing Implementation:
- Controller plugin (WiiMote / hardware support will come first oddly enough)
- Sound plugin (Can affect performance once enabled)
- Screen scaling & rotation
- ROM selection screen & my usual emulator’s layout
- Improve compatibility a bit as I most likely made a bug or two in the dynarec port

“Note that performance can be improved from what is currently shown here. I am using NO frameskip. I also am not using all the assembly for vector math within the GPU currently. Sound and controlling the emulator aren’t within this video as I still need to implement sound & controller plugins.”

A Jailbroken iPhone On Display At Bestbuy

December 18, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

First it was the whole jailbroken iphone in a commercial click here if you missed it and now this. It seems jailbreaking the iPhone is becoming more common to the public. Me2600 a fellow iphone user was at bestbuy going on about his day and to his surprise he saw an iphone on display, yes yes I know we all see iphones on display but to his surprise this one was jailbroken with Rockapp and Mywi installed. All I can think is way to go best buy employee who had to have taken the time to jailbreak, browse for and install the apps on the iphone then put it on display for the world to see. May I also recommend installing some other cool apps that might catch peoples attention such as nes or intelliscreeen.

Note: Pay close attention to the 29 sec mark of the video, it seems whoever installed MyWi somehow patched or did some easy workaround to make the normal 14 day trial of the app last 3451 days.

AT&T Attempts To Cool Rumors Of Tiered iPhone Data Plans

December 18, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

An AT&T executive this week made comments to assure customers that the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the U.S. will not implement tiered data plans.

The comments from Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of mobility and consumer markets, came just a week after the AT&T official said the company would likely provide incentives to encourage bandwidth-hogging customers to “reduce or modify their usage.” What kind of incentives were never made clear, though de la Vega said it is inevitable that high-bandwidth users will be charged for what they consume.
