December 17, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Though previous studies found the iPhone was outselling Windows Mobile devices and had a greater presence online, Apple’s handset finally unseated Microsoft devices in terms of overall use in October, a new study has found.

The latest survey of mobile operating system marketshare from research firm comScore found that the iPhone spiked to nearly 9 million U.S. users by the month of October, pushing it well past Microsoft’s total of just over 7 million users. In July, the two companies were about even in total mobile OS market share. The latest survey data was obtained by FierceWireless.

Microsoft Delivers Bing Search App

December 16, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Search is really getting interesting these days. Microsoft late last night released Bing [iTunes link] for the iPhone — a full featured free app offering search, movies, maps, and directions, all with voice control.

It’s notable that Microsoft is going after iPhone mind-share after Steve Ballmer famously dissed the iPhone more than 2 years ago. He’s had to sit back and watch the iPhone eclipse Windows Mobile phones in the marketplace, which can’t be pleasant, but business is business, and Microsoft is pushing the Bing search suite of tools hard.

December 16, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

We’re sure this will be a hit for the holiday season: Apple recently updated one of the iPhone support articles, explaining how you can continue using an iPhone as a quasi-iPod touch, if you no longer have a cellphone contract with your carrier. Let’s give an example:

Your iPhone 3G contract was eligible for the upgrade pricing not too long ago, so you purchased an iPhone 3GS. You have your old iPhone 3G lying around the house with no purpose. Obviously, you could try and sell it… but maybe your child has been begging you for an iPod touch for Christmas. Read more…

Before you get your panties in a bunch, yes, this functionality has been available to us for some time. I’ve been using Jaadu VNC for awhile which works pretty good. Can be a little time consuming, but the ability to control your PC from anywhere is great feature for iPhone users. There are of course a number of other apps that do similar functions, however it appears as thoughApple is looking to make this a feature that is built into the iPhone.

McDonald’s to Offer Free WiFi at 11,000 Locations

December 15, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

McDonald’s will soon offer free wireless Internet at around 11,000 of its domestic locations, reports the WSJ.

The company is hoping to transform itself from an in and out fast food location into a hang out destination.

Thanks to a partnership with AT&T, McDonald’s will drop the $2.95 fee that it had charged customers for two hours of WiFi, McDonald’s USA Chief Information Officer David Grooms said in an interview.

The fast food chain hopes this will keep customers around longer and perhaps cause them to buy some of the McCafe line of coffee drinks while surfing the net.

McDonald’s also has plans to begin selling items like frappes and smoothies by mid-2010.
