AT&T activates 3.2 million iPhones in 3Q

October 23, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Reports of trouble for AT&T’s 3G network have done nothing to keep people from the iPhone in the U.S.

The nation’s second largest wireless carrier announced third-quarter earnings Thursday morning that were full of iPhone goodness. AT&T (T) activated a record 3.2 million iPhones in 3Q, 40% of which went to people new to the company.

Wireless data was the supporting star of the show. Services such as messaging, Internet access and the like were up 33.6% from 3Q of 2008 to $3.6 billion. Data sales now account for 29.4% of AT&T’s wireless revenue.

The company’s earnings were relatively flat, having posted a profit of $3.2 billion, or 54 cents a share for 3Q ‘09 versus $3.23 billion or 55 cents a share for 3Q of ‘08. AT&T did, however, bring in enough to beat analyst expectations. The street was only looking for earnings of 50 cents a share.

Nokia said in a statement that the patents in question, “relate to technologies fundamental to making devices,” that are compatible with the GSM, UMTS, or 3G WCDMA, and wireless LAN standards.

The company went on to say that the technologies in the suit cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption technologies, and that Apple’s iPhones have infringed on all the patents in question since the iPhone launched in 2007.

Firewall Application Coming To The iPhone Soon

October 21, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

This is the first firewall application for the iPhone and iPod Touch which alerts users whenever an application requires the use the internet.

The application will work in two parts: The first will use MobileSubstrate, it remains active but nonetheless provides a good overall speed, using a little amount of RAM memory. Every time you start an application the app will bring up a menu of information and find out what the app is trying to access or better yet, what details about your phone its trying to send out. You can choose to do the following:

  • Allow the connection only once;
  • Block the connection only once;
  • Always allow the connection;
  • Always lock the connection;
  • Allowing any request for a specific application;
  • Block any request for a specific application.

The second part of the application will be an icon with all of the settings and will allow you to change your settings for the apps you’ve already denied access to the internet if you need to do so.

Motorola Droid, The iPhone’s New Competitor

October 20, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

We absolutely nailed this puppy to the wall over and over and over again, so it’s only fitting we’d be doing the first actual unveiling, right? We’re not going to get too in-depth though, that will come at a later time. Here are some brief thoughts before the photos:

* It’s running Android 2.0. Duh.
* It’s thin. Just slightly thicker than an iPhone 3GS and the thinnest QWERTY-slider we’ve ever seen.
* It is the fastest Android device we’ve ever used. (It’s running a TI OMAP3430 processor)
* The feel of the device is very reminiscent of the OQO 02 model computer. Just smaller. It’s metal with a non-spring-assisted slide, very sturdy, and half soft-touch plastic. Read more…

October 19, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

If you were Jack Dorsey, one of the co-founders and current chairman of Twitter, you’d want to think about something else big to follow up on your huge success.

While it doesn’t sound like anything groundbreaking, Dorsey’s new company Square is developing a tiny white cube (see photo above) that plugs into the headphone jack on either an iPhone or iPod touch. The cube is a credit card reader, something missing from all of those credit card apps currently in the iTunes App Store. Read more…
