Saurik live chat: Learn about Apple’s new signature server

September 25, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Something new, unexpected, and possibly worrying has popped up in iTunes. iTunes now “calls home” to the Apple mothership whenever you restore an iPhone or iPod touch. It tells you that it’s “Verifying restore with Apple…”, checking your device identifier and the firmware with Apple’s new signature server.

Today, TUAW has the pleasure of talking with Jay Freeman, otherwise known as “Saurik”, the developer of Cydia. Saurik has constructed a server that duplicates Apple’s functionality, ensuring that you’ll be able to downgrade your iPhone or iPod in the future, even if you have not jailbroken your device. This topic is for all iPhone users, regardless of whether they use jailbreaking. Please join us with your questions and comments as we hear from Freeman about why this move matters to you.

Smartscreen

September 24, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Today MediaPhone announced ‘SmartScreen’ an application for the iPhone and iPod touch that will allow informational widgets to be placed and used on the lock screen.
Widgets are similar to those offered by Apple’s ‘dashboard’ and they follow familiar look and feel.
The widgets can be rearranged on the lock screen by using a ‘tap and hold to move’ action that is often used by to iPhone users (when moving icons around the home screen).
The application will work on all models of iPhone and iPod touch that run OS 3.x, unfortunately due to the nature of the product it will not be available for purchase in the Apple AppStore but will be sold to customers of jailbroken phones via alternate means.
A SmartScreen SDK will be available to everyone in November 2009 but widget developers are being selected to participate in a Beta programme, if you feel you could participate and would like to produce widgets, please email and we will consider you early access to the programme.

Apple confirms it banned iPhone porn app

September 24, 2009 :: Posted by - Thomas :: Category - News

Porn App

And here comes the ban of the apparently very popular iPhone porn app, while not too unexpected, the reason behind it took a while to completely come out.

Thursday saw the first softcore porn app arrive for the iPhone, only to disappear hours later. Many, including myself, thought Apple had approved and then banned the app, but a note on the developer’s Web site indicated that he asked for the app to be removed.

The developer’s note read:

“The Hottest Girls app is temporarily sold out. The server usage is extremely high because of the popularity of this app. Thus, by not distributing the app, we can prevent our servers from crashing. Customer satisfaction is more important to us than profits. Those who already have the app will still be able to use our app. To answer the question on everyone’s mind: Yes, the topless images will still be there when it is sold again.”

TomTom Car Kit for iPhone Appears in Apple’s European Online Stores

September 24, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

TomTom’s much-anticipated iPhone GPS car kit has appeared on a number of European Apple online stores, including the UK store. Scheduled to ship in 2-3 weeks, the kit is priced at £99.95 (US$164.10) in the UK and 99.95 Euro (US$147.90) in other European countries, which includes the TomTom iPhone application.

Did you notice?

You get both the TomTom navigation app for your iPhone 3GS or 3G and the docking kit to hold your iPhone securely in place on your dashboard or windscreen.

Details on the car kit, including the user guide, were posted to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s site late last month. The kit, which had been expected to be launched this summer, was pushed back to an October release earlier this month.

TomTom’s car kit contains an external GPS receiver and other hardware features and has been claimed to be compatible with the iPod touch and other GPS iPhone applications from other vendors, but Apple’s product description makes no mention of compatibility with those offerings.
