AT&T Preparing for ‘Unannounced’ Device?

January 20, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

BoyGeniusReport has heard that AT&T is meeting individually with regional executives to inform them of changes to the AT&T network.

What have we heard? Well, for starters, they seem to be focused on prepping the network to compensate for unannounced devices and also future devices that will use “heavy data.” What about tethering options? AT&T has said that changes to current data plans and tethering plans (or availability) will change when the network is able to “sufficiently handle the load.”

Although vague, this information corroborates reports that the tablet could have 3G network capabilities.

Earthquake Survivor Says iPhone Helped Save His Life

January 20, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

“Usually, when someone says their iPhone is a life saver, they are talking about the phone helping them find a good takeout spot or an emergency bathroom,” Todd Wright reports for NBC Miami.

“When Dan Woolley says it, he really means it. He used a medical app saved on his phone to treat a leg injury after the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince collapsed around him,” Wright reports. “Woolley, who is from Colorado Springs, is one of the Americans who survived the massive earthquake that hit Haiti last week, and he did it with an iPhone application. Woolley is now recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, but it was his fast actions with the app that may have saved his life.” Read more…

More Hints at Apple’s Desire to Hold ‘iPad’ Trademark

January 20, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Yesterday, we uncovered evidence that Apple has been pursuing trademarks for the name “iPad”, with some filings occurring as recently as late last week. The move has obviously led to speculation that Apple may be planning to use that name for its tablet device rumored for introduction next week.

At the time, we noted that Apple had not pursued an “iPad” trademark in the United States, ostensibly due to existing claims on the name by Fujitsu for an electronic retail inventory device. While Fujitsu initially filed its trademark application for “iPad” in March 2003, the trademark has yet to be officially accepted, and was in fact classified by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as “abandoned” in April 2009 after Fujitsu failed to respond to a request for additional information. ‘Minor issues’ Could Result In June Launch For Apple Tablet

January 19, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

While Apple’s tablet is still expected to see a formal introduction at a media event next week, issues with battery life and durability could result in a June launch, an analyst said Tuesday.

In a new note to investors, Shaw Wu with Kaufman Bros. said checks with supply chain sources indicate the launch pattern for the tablet could follow that of the original iPhone in 2007, with a January unveiling and final product shipping to consumers six months later. He said that the June launch could be due to “minor issues” with more work needed on battery life and durability.

However, he said, checks also indicate that a tablet-type device will be introduced next week, at a Jan. 27 event, where the company has advertised it plans to show off its “latest creation.” Wu described the product as being like a “super” iPod touch. Read more…

View All “Get a Mac” Apple Ads In One Place

January 19, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

It’s hard to believe that Apple’s “Get a Mac” ad campaign is already 4 years old. Since its introduction, the campaign has invited both parody and serious responses from competitors. Plus, poor* John Hodgman and Justin Long can’t walk out the door without someone calling them either “Mac” or “PC.”

Some have been better than others (the Christmas ads are always a highlight), and Apple keeps several of each year’s ads on their site. If you’d like to browse the full history of these ads, check out this page assembled by the folks at AdFreak. Read more…
