Burglars Stealing From LA Apple Store Customers

January 08, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

I better be careful next time I walk out of my Apple Store here in Santa Monica — apparently burglars are targeting Apple Store customers here in the Los Angeles area. Over 100 customers have apparently been targeted after leaving the store and keeping a computer or other purchase in their car. The thieves wait for customers to walk away from Apple Store bags in their car, either at home or at another store, and then they break in and take them. For some reason, no computers have yet been returned, either, which makes cops think that they’re possibly being “shipped out of the country or fenced right away.” But of course that would require an organized ring, and police aren’t even sure these are all related yet. Next Generation iPhone to Finally Get Camera Flash?

January 08, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Apple has moved to obtain large quantities of LED camera flash components, according to an AppleInsider report.

The site has learned that Apple is seeking allotments of LED camera flash components in the tens of millions for delivery during the 2010 calendar year. Due to their sales volume the iPhones and maybe even the iPod touch are the most likely recipients.

Their same sources believe that the Philips’ Lumileds Lighting sector may have already secured the win for this contract.

Its thought that Apple will use the Philips LUXEON LED camera flash technology which combines the brightness of regular lighting with the long life and tiny size of LEDs. This technology is commonly used with 5+ megapixel cameras and has successfully shipped over 200 million units worldwide.

The LEDs could also be used to provide light for video recording and flashlight applications.

Apple Investigates Slimmer, Lighter Dual-Function Touchscreens

January 07, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

A new patent application revealed this week suggests Apple is looking to improve its touchscreen displays with technology that could make them thinner, lighter and brighter.

The application, entitled “Display with Dual-Function Capacity Elements,” describes a pair of voltage lines that run across adjacent display pixels. With the described technology, capacitors could be included in the pixels of an LCD display, and could operate individually.

This method would allow panels with integrated touch sensors to be manufactured with fewer parts and processing steps, allowing the display to be thinner, lighter, and brighter. The method would eliminate the need for a touch sensor panel overlaying a display. Read more…

Apple Controls Product Leaks Says Former Apple Marketing Insider

January 06, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Former Apple Senior Marketing Manager John Martellaro today penned an interesting piece describing the company’s strategy for issuing controlled leaks, pointing to Monday’s Wall Street Journal article on Apple’s tablet device as a likely instance of such an information release.

Martellaro notes that Apple engages in the practice of controlled leaks for a number of reasons, including motivational, market research, competitive, and hype-building concerns. Controlled leaks, which are always conducted in person or over the phone in order to leave no paper trail, also serve as a prime way for Apple to disseminate information while still appearing to maintain its veil of secrecy about unreleased products. Apple Tablet To Support Multiple Wireless Carriers?

January 06, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

With their upcoming tablet, Apple may be offering the flexibility that many prospective U.S. iPhone owners have wished for: carrier independence. According to a Broadpoint AmTech analyst, Apple will be offering 3G wireless data networking on their Tablet with multiple providers with Verizon support a “certainty”.

This would mean that customers will be able to choose from a number of mobile providers for their Tablet’s data service when not near a Wi-Fi hotspot. This would allow Tablet users to browse the web, check their email, and more wherever there was 3G service. Such connectivity is taken for granted on mobile phones such as the iPhone, but is increasingly expected for other mobile devices. Read more…
