Apple Takes Home Top Honors in Adweek’s Best of the 2000s

December 14, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Apple has taken home top honors in six different categories of Adweek’s Best of the 2000s.

To wind up the 21st century’s first decade, we’ve spent the past month working on a list of the best and brightest in the branding, marketing, media and agency world in 33 categories over the past 10 years.

Marketer of the Decade (Steve Jobs):
When Steve Jobs returned to a struggling Apple in 1997, he brought back his original agency, TBWA\Chiat\Day, with specific instructions: Buy us some time. Jobs knew that the iMac could well save the company he’d founded in 1976 (he’d left a decade later, after a management shakeup)—but the new model was 12 months off. Meanwhile, to let the world know Apple was not going away, Jobs needed a rallying cry—something to remind the core following of Apple’s rebel spirit. The result: “Think different.”… Read more…

Appstore App iVideoCamera Lets You Record Video On Your Old iPhone

December 14, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

It appears Apple really is loosening it’s grip on what developers can submit to the AppStore. I received an email today that informed me of a new App in the AppStore called iVideoCamera that lets your record about 15fps on anyiPhone.

Although this makes me wonder, with Apple being so kind to the new handful of Video apps, does this mean that we might be seeing OS 3.2 soon? And could it possibly include the addition ofvideo recording for the iPhone 2G/3G? It’s quite possible at this point, as they wouldn’t want too many apps “duplicating” a function that “already exists”.

iVideoCamera also gives you the ability to save to your camera roll or “Photos” and share via, FaceBook, YouTube, Vimeo, Twitter and more to come. With the approval of this App the devs are very excited to start updates. First Knocking, then UStream, I wonder what we will see next in the lineup of Video apps…

iVideoCamera is available in the AppStore for $0.99.

Apple May Be Testing iPhone OS 3.1.3 and OS 4.0

December 14, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Server logs indicate that Apple may be testing two new versions of the iPhone OS.

The BoyGeniusReport found evidence of two new user agents in their log files. The first, iPhone OS 3.1.3 would be a minor bug fix. The second, iPhone OS 4.0 would be a significant upgrade to the operating system.

Its important to note that user agents can be faked; however, its fairly obvious that Apple would already be working on the next update.

NY Times Blames iPhone Hardware for AT&T Network Problems

December 14, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

A new article in the New York Times suggests that faulty iPhone hardware is the cause of network issues experienced on AT&T.

The article entitled, “AT&T Takes the Blame, Even for the iPhone’s Faults” by Randall Stross, notes that AT&T has performed worst according to customer feedback. It suggests that in reality AT&T is the best network but faulty iPhone hardware is causing a poor network experience.

Roger Entner, senior vice president for telecommunications research at Nielsen, said the iPhone’s “air interface,” the electronics in the phone that connect it to the cell towers, had shortcomings that “affect both voice and data. Read more…

ProSwitcher : A Free and OpenSource Multitasking App for the iPhone

December 11, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Say What? A Free and OpenSource Multitasking App? What about multifl0w you say? Hope you didn’t think that was going to be the last multitasking app to come to the iPhone. A few days ago we got wind of some screenshots and information for the new app.

Ryan Petrich, developer of OverBoard, has announced ProSwitcher, another Palm Web OS inspired utility to navigate through the applications running in the background on your iPhone, much like MultiFl0w does, only much easier, faster and more intuitive. And to top it all off, it’s FREE andOpenSource! The app is also being developed with the help of chpwn. The project actually started out as PreSwitcher, but the Ryan thought the name may cause some trouble, so now we have ProSwitcher. Read more…

Microsoft Developing Live Messenger and Bing for the iPhone

December 11, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Neowin has released a report that claims Microsoft is working on two new applications for the AppStore, one being a Bing application and the other for Windows Live Messenger on the iPhone. Unfortunately the applications won’t be released until March, which should time nicely with their release of Windows Live Wave 4 updates.

Quote:
“Everyone understands the popularity and the pervasiveness of the platform,” said Microsoft principal group program manager David Raissipour, following a Bing event Wednesday. “We are actively working on it.”

Microsoft already has two applications in the AppStore called Tag Reader and Seadragon, so these wouldn’t be the first apps microsoft has brought to the iPhone. This comes as no surprise, as it’s quite clear that this point that the iPhone marketshare is much more demanding than the Windows Mobile market. Microsoft understands it needs to compete multi-platform for its web and cloud based applications if it wants to maintain and grow market share, heck they even have Blackberry apps available.

Apple Countersues Nokia

December 11, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Having been sued by Nokia for patent infringement, Apple today responded by filing a countersuit of its own. The new complaint accuses Nokia of violating 13 of Apple’s patents. In announcing the counterclaim, Bruce Sewell, Apple’s General Counsel and senior vice president, said “Other companies must compete with us by inventing their own technologies, not just by stealing ours.”

On October 22, Nokia sued Apple, saying the iPhone maker was taking a “free ride” on Nokia’s research and development efforts, which the Finnish phone giant said said it had spent €40 billion on. Saying, essentially, “no, you’re the copycat,” Apple’s countersuit denies all Nokia’s claims of patent infringement against it and accuses Nokia of trying to copy the iPhone.

Facebook Gains iTunes Gift Card Feature

December 10, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The 350 million users of popular social networking site Facebook now have another application they can benefit from — the ability to purchase iTunes gift cards for other Facebook users.

This timely functionality, reports The Loop, will let Facebook fans use the familiar interface to purchase and send iTunes gift cards in US$5, $10, $15, $25, and $50 denominations. The interface allows users to select a date on which the gift card will be delivered, meaning that you could theoretically do all of your birthday shopping for the next few years in one Facebook session, and then let Facebook do all the hard work of remembering birthdays and hoildays.

There are six different card designs available at this time, including two holiday cards, two birthday cards, and two generic “any occasion” cards. As with other Facebook apps, you must approve the app and let it have access to your profile information. Unfortunately for international Facebook users, the app is only valid for the U.S. iTunes store at this time.
