Apple May Extend Att iPhone Exclusivity??

February 09, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Two new analysts said Tuesday that the iPad-AT&T deal suggests Apple may extend its exclusive iPhone agreement through 2011, leaving the wireless provider as the sole carrier of the handset in the U.S. this year.

While speculation was rife for months (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) that Apple would partner with Verizon for a new CDMA-compatible iPhone this summer, sentiment has changed in recent weeks, after Apple publicly stood by AT&T and also announced an agreement with the carrier for the iPad’s domestic 3G data plan. Lending its support for that line of thinking Tuesday was Barclays Capital, which issued a new note to investors with the conclusion that Apple and AT&T will likely remain exclusive for the remainder of 2010. ATT Outbid Other Carriers for iPad??

February 03, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

FoxNEWS correspondent Clayton Morris is reporting that AT&T outbid every other carrier for the iPad leaving even him surprised.

“Where was Verizon? I thought it would be both carriers. As I reported before the event, Verizon appeared to be on board and was even working out the final details of the partnership.”

Sources at Verizon say that the company is more interested in the lucrative iPhone contracts; however, the two companies are still “very much talking and plan to bring an iPhone and an iPad” to the CDMA network this year after AT&T’s exclusive agreement with Apple expires. Read more…

AT&T Resumes Online iPhone Sales To New York City Residents

December 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

AT&T has resumed taking iPhone orders from New York City residents through its website after blocking the sale of the handsets to New Yorkers this past weekend for reasons the carrier has been unwilling to explain in detail.

The sales suspension drew hundreds of headlines from technology websites on Monday, fueling suspicions that the move was yet another sign that the exclusive US iPhone carrier was unable to support the brunt of the handset’s popularity in dense metropolitan areas.

Tethering

AT&T subscribers still won’t be able to use their iPhones as wireless modems for their computers, despite the carrier’s reversed position on Internet-phone applications.

Tethering, the process of using an Internet-enabled mobile device, such as a cellphone, to provide access to a laptop or other computer, is part of Apple’s list of features in the iPhone, but AT&T doesn’t support it in the U.S., where it’s the only iPhone seller.

iPhone Dev: Future Proof Your iPhone 3GS Jailbreak

September 15, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Future-proofing the 3GS jailbreak

If there’s one thing we’ve been stressing the last few weeks, it’s that if you want to keep the jailbreak or unlock on your 3GS, you should resist all urges to install Apple’s official firmware updates without knowing if a jailbreak exists for that version yet.  Unless another (different) bootrom exploit is found for the 3GS that doesn’t require a “foot in the door” with a signed official iBoot, then accepting official updates willy-nilly may cause you to be cutoff from the jailbreak.  And it will definitely cause you to be cutoff from the carrier unlock.

Now, there are ways to ensure that even after taking an official 3GS update (which you really shouldn’t do!), that you’ll nonetheless be able to revert to a jailbreakable 3GS (this is NOT true for the unlock, see NOTE #1 below).  We’ve been explaining these methods (like the iTunes /tmp technique) over the last few weeks, and there’s been some great discussion and feedback for the methods in the comments.

Having said all that, we realize that some of you updated your 3GS to 3.1 anyway.  If you want to come back to the world of the jailbreak (but NOT the sim unlock, sorry!) then saurik’s new “on file” server may be able to help.  He’s Read more…
