A premature press release posting earlier this month has now been made official, with Visa announcing that its partnership with DeviceFidelity will see the launch of a specially-designed iPhone case that will integrate a microSD slot to facilitate contactless payment transactions.

DeviceFidelity, Inc. today announced the availability of its In2Pay solution for iPhone, designed to enable iPhone users to make contactless transactions, such as Visa mobile payments, by simply waving the iPhone in front of a contactless payment terminal. The solution combines DeviceFidelity’s In2Pay microSD technology with a specially designed, patent-pending protective case that adds mobile contactless capability and works with iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G. When announcing the iPad, Apple promised that all 3G models would be unlocked. Turns out that is not the case.

The iPad releases to nine additional countries on May 28th. Eight of those countries will get an unlocked iPad. Japan will not.

All Japanese models will be SIM-locked to Softbank Mobile, Apple’s iPhone partner in Japan, Apple said late Monday. The company confirmed the presence of a SIM lock but couldn’t immediately explain why it was enforcing the restriction in Japan. Read more…

With all of the chaos going on around the lost iPhone case, everyone has more or less assumed that Apple is behind the police department’s actions in searching Gizmodo Editor Jason Chen’s house late last week. Of course, no one believes that the sheriff is working for Apple, but most people seem to be under the impression that Apple wants to get to the bottom of the case, and that the company is pulling strings in law enforcement to try and do that. You know, for all the praise the iPhone has received in its time, we never thought it looked quite Matrix-y enough. Thankfully, that all-important deficiency has been remedied by a man named Ryan Glasgow up in Portland, who has just started selling the above case to all who care to have one.
