January 29, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Despite a slow start, Apple’s smartphone presence in China could grow to 5 million iPhone sales per year — and could even double that if the company were to offer a lower cost prepaid model.

Analyst Katy Huberty with Morgan Stanley issued a note to investors Friday stating that she is bullish on the prospect of improved future iPhone sales in China. This week, Apple executive revealed that more than 200,000 iPhones have been activated since the handset launched on carrier China Unicom last fall.

Huberty noted that the current install base of unlocked iPhones in China is about 2 million, according to a new study conducted by Morgan Stanley. That is already similar to the largest European and Asian countries. Read more…

11 Apple iPhones Sold In China On Opening Weekend

November 03, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

As you guys may know apple and china have been in negotiations for the past year. An agreemant was finally reached and the iphone was to be sold in China this last weekend. Unfortunately only 11 iPhones were sold, ten on one day and 1 the next. It is said that the official iPhone didn’t sell because of the black market iphones which come unlocked and have wifi enabled are a better deal. I myself believe the iPhone’s in China are way overpriced as an iPhone under contract with China Unicom for two years will run you at about ¥20,000 (3,000 USD). That is more than what an average Chinese worker makes in a year..

China Unicom to start selling the iPhone in October

September 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Hong Kong-based China Unicom released details today concerning its August announcement of a three-year deal to sell the iPhone. Sales of the iPhone will begin in October, dovetailing with its October 1st 3G network launch, and will be priced at approximately 5000 Yuan, or around US$730. The iPhone will be sold in both Apple retail stores and through Unicom’s own network of stores, and plans for the iPhone will range from 126 Yuan to 886 Yuan, or about US$18 to US$130. There will also be a handset subsidy, depending on the chosen plan above 126 Yuan, which maxes out at 4253 Yuan, or about US$623.
China Unicom competes heavily with the larger China Telecom, which is believed to be in negotiations to distribute the Palm Pre.

Apple Looking to Bypass Chinese Carriers by Selling Unlockable iPhones Through Retail

September 03, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News
BusinessWeek reports on a note from Wedge Partners research analyst Matt Mathison, who believes that Apple is looking to make a deal with Chinese retailer Di Xing Tong to offer iPhones that could be unlocked for use on the network of China Mobile, the world’s largest wireless carrier.

Despite ongoing talk about possible tie-up with the mother of all cellular carriers, China Mobile, equity research firm Wedge Partners believes Apple may have found a new way to sell iPhones to some of the carrier’s half-a-billion subscribers. Wedge’s managing principal, Matt Mathison, thinks Apple will ink a deal with a large cell-phone retailer called Di Xing Tong, which owns hundreds of storefronts in China. The chain is owned by Foxconn, the massive contract manufacturer that builds so many of Apple’s products.

Following announcement of a deal with China Unicom last week that has been confirmed to be non-exclusive, reports have emerged that Apple is continuing to negotiate with China Mobile despite little success in the multi-year talks so far.

BusinessWeek notes, however, that China Mobile has just announced its own smart phone operating system, Ophone, which may lessen the company’s incentive to strike a deal with Apple for the iPhone and make sales of potentially unlockable iPhones through third-party brick-and-mortar retailers more likely for Apple. Mathison is careful to note that, while Apple likely would not directly offer unlocked iPhones, it might be willing to turn a blind eye to the practice in order to reach more customers.

Mathison claims that Apple has concerns about partner China Unicom’s marketing prowess and network quality, factors which may push Apple to vigorously continue to pursue distribution on other carriers’ networks there. Mathison sees such a deal with Di Xing Tong as possibly doubling the number of iPhones Apple could sell in China in 2010.
