Developers have done a little more poking around with iPhone OS 4.0, and it looks like Apple is set to get much more social with the next version of the iPhone. Not only will the new OS include the new gaming network Game Center, but apparently the OS will also integrate Facebook contacts directly into apps on the phone. Read more…

Final Fantasy I and II Coming To The iPhone/iPod Touch

January 21, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Just announced at Square Enix’s Facebook page: Final Fantasy I and II are coming to an App Store near you. The nearly 20-year-old games have been remastered and re-released a number of times, with versions appearing for just about every platform invented thus far, so it was only a matter of time before they made their way to the iPhone and iPod touch.

Release date and pricing are both TBA, and nothing official has been announced on Square Enix’s official site as of yet, but in the meantime, they’ve posted screenshots, and they look quite excellent. With Final Fantasy XIII coming out for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in March, going all the way back to the long-running series’ beginning on the iPhone sounds like a really fun way to pass the next couple of months.

Facebook Blocks Defriended App

January 15, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The Defriended app was released earlier this week. It had a pretty simple function: to figure out who “defriended” you on Facebook. This is a function that’s not available on either Facebook’s website or theiPhone app, and the practice is common enough that the synonym “unfriend” was named New Word of the Year by the New Oxford American Dictionary, so this app obviously had appeal for those who wonder why they don’t see updates for certain people any more. iPhone Users Beware Of Facebook 3.1 Contact Syncing

January 14, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

As if Facebook 3.1 for iPhone and iPod touch didn’t have enough problems, dmackdaddy let us know this potentially embarrassing problem he’s experiencing with the new contact picture syncing functionality:

Beware of your profile pics, or your boss might get one of you doing something you don’t want them to see! What happens is, [Facebook 3.1] takes [all] the emails and phone numbers on your iPhone and sends them to Facebook. It then cross-checks and syncs them back to your iPhone. That’s a major security flaw right there! It should only sync the ones you’re friends with.

So for an example I have my coworker’s email and cell but I am not her Facebook friend. All of a sudden when I got a call from my coworker I saw a picture of her in a bikini because that was her [Facebook] profile pic! Read more…

Facebook Gains iTunes Gift Card Feature

December 10, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The 350 million users of popular social networking site Facebook now have another application they can benefit from — the ability to purchase iTunes gift cards for other Facebook users.

This timely functionality, reports The Loop, will let Facebook fans use the familiar interface to purchase and send iTunes gift cards in US$5, $10, $15, $25, and $50 denominations. The interface allows users to select a date on which the gift card will be delivered, meaning that you could theoretically do all of your birthday shopping for the next few years in one Facebook session, and then let Facebook do all the hard work of remembering birthdays and hoildays.

There are six different card designs available at this time, including two holiday cards, two birthday cards, and two generic “any occasion” cards. As with other Facebook apps, you must approve the app and let it have access to your profile information. Unfortunately for international Facebook users, the app is only valid for the U.S. iTunes store at this time.

iPhone Home Screen Concept Becomes Reality

November 14, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The Teehan+Lax iPhone home screen concept is about to become a reality thanks to saurik.

Initially the concept will materialize as a lockscreen widget via saurik’s new Cydget framework. Dubbed Element, a beta will hopefully be available by next week.

You can see from the screens it’s essentially just a scrollable list of applications and notifications. We envision it behaving in much the same way that the list view does in the Calendar application. Read more…

12mail: Short video messaging arrives on iPhone

September 24, 2009 :: Posted by - Thomas :: Category - News

12mail

12seconds.tv, a micro video messaging service dubbed by some as “Twitter for video,” is bringing the same short format to private video messaging in its second iPhone app, 12Mail.

The basic gist of the app, released this week, is that you can record a video, up to 12 seconds, and send it off to one of your friends. Your friend then gets a push notification and can watch it. Read more…
