May 13, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

As part of a planned expansion of electronics products in its retail stores, Walmart hopes to sell Apple’s iPad in some of its retail locations starting this year.

Gary Severson, senior vice president of entertainment for Walmart’s U.S. stores, told BusinessWeek that his company believes it will carry the iPad later this year. Specific details, including timing and pricing, were not provided.

Since the iPad launched in early April, Apple has sold the multitouch device at its own retail stores, as well as Best Buy and other assisted locations. Some Apple Specialist locations also carry the hardware. Read more…

Apple to Release Carrier Locked iPad After All?

May 10, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

When announcing the iPad, Apple promised that all 3G models would be unlocked. Turns out that is not the case.

The iPad releases to nine additional countries on May 28th. Eight of those countries will get an unlocked iPad. Japan will not.

All Japanese models will be SIM-locked to Softbank Mobile, Apple’s iPhone partner in Japan, Apple said late Monday. The company confirmed the presence of a SIM lock but couldn’t immediately explain why it was enforcing the restriction in Japan. Read more…

8 Ways The iPhone Pwns The iPad

iPad

We love our iPads. We wouldn’t dream of giving them up. And yet, there are ways and situations where the iPhone simply works better. Without taking potshots at our beloved iPad, here is TUAW’s respectful list of mega-win scenarios where the iPhone takes first place in usability.

Making phone calls. Yes, you can use line2 to convert your iPad into a quasi-phone that accepts incoming calls, or fire up the Skype app, but for real-world use, nothing beats a device that you can stick into your pocket and then forget about. It rings, you answer, you talk, you hang up. It’s a lot easier to use an iPhone than an iPad to make phone calls. Read more…

We all want it on our iPads…). Both Cydia and Rock.app are getting makeovers to fit the big screen. We got a sneak peek at Rock.app’s iPad UI. To View More Pics Read more…

How To Save Your iPad, 3GS, iPod Touch SHSH File

April 30, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

To everyone that wants to be sure and get there shsh’s saved before sauriks server gets slammed with shsh requests from every jailbroken user in the world plus the new ipads on the market, I suggest you get your shsh blobs now. The main reason i say this is because saurik can’t handle all requests at one time and sometimes you will get a pending message when you open cydia. Remember that spirit is a user land jailbreak meaning that Apple is going to release a new firmware very soon after it’s release so for those of you who aren’t at the front of the line getting your shsh’s saved with sauriks server using cydia and your pending, say goodbye to your shsh blobs since apple stops issuing those as soon as a new firmware comes out and that is where saurik pulls your shsh’s from.. I apologize for the long rant but I just want my readers to know its better to be safe than sorry.

Dev Team: Calm Before The Spirit Storm

April 29, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

At some point after (don’t ask when!) the iPad 3G is actually in customers’ hands, the first “userland” jailbreak since firmware 1.x will be released by @comex.  It’s called “Spirit” and was first demonstrated working on an iPad by @MuscleNerd within 24 hours of the iPad’s release on April 3.

Userland jailbreaks are more troublesome for Apple since they expose security weaknesses that exist even for non-jailbroken owners.  As such, Apple is likely to close them soon after they’re made public. One recent example of this is the SMS vulnerability exposed at Blackhat last summer.  Apple released new firmware to close that hole within a day. Read more…

Setting Up Your 3G Service On The iPad 3G

It’s been an exciting iPad 3G day. First, nearly everyone’s iPads were marked for shipment, then AT&T unveiled iPad 3G data information. While most still wait for their iPad 3Gs to arrive tomorrow, reader Robert S. was kind enough to send us the following screen shots of signing up for AT&T 3G service on his iPad 3G (he got his a day early — lucky guy). International iPad Release Pushed Back

April 14, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

This will come as a disappointment to our international readers, but it seems that Apple has pushed the international iPad release back an entire month.

The iPad’s UK page used to say “Coming late April.” Today that was changed to “Coming late May.” The good news is that Apple has set a pre-order date of May 10th in the UK, Canada, France, Australia and Germany.

In a press release today, Apple said that the iPad’s US popularity is to blame for the lag: “Demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad.” Apple also said they sold more than half a million iPads in the first week.

Apple Snags The iPad Trademark!

March 26, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

No more sleepless nights for Apple’s lawyers, at least not until the Nokia and HTC suits begin to heat up. The company is now the proud owner of a slightly used trademark: iPad™, as of March 17, is no longer a Fujitsu mark and has been assigned to Apple. Much speculation had surrounded the trademark process for iPad, as Fujitsu’s mark was being challenged by Apple as early as September 2009, but it looks like the two companies have come to some sort of agreement. iPad Pending FCC Approval

January 28, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

A few of our readers have pointed out this interesting little blurb currently found down at the bottom of the iPad’s specs page:

This device has not yet been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.

Did Apple just announce a “magical and revolutionary product” that they can’t yet sell? Yes and no. Yes, given that the 3G iPads will connect to the cell phone network, the FCC will have to approve them. But will that be a problem? Probably not. Read more…
