A new report from reputable sources says that Apple will finally deliver a multi-tasking manager for the iPhone in OS 4.0.

According to AppleInsider, “people with a proven track record in predicting Apple’s technological advances” say that the company has developed a “full-on solution” to multitasking for the iPhone OS.

From a user-facing perspective, Apple plans to deliver a multi-tasking manager that leverages interface technology already bundled with its Mac OS X operating system, according to those same people. Read more…

Power A iPhone Case Transforms iPhone Into Universal Remote

February 25, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

It’s not the first peripheral that turns an iPhone into a universal remote control, but this Power A case means you don’t have to slip it off when you’ve stopped using it at home—it’s got two functions.

The app is free to download for both the iPhone and iPod Touch, and provides the interface for controlling any IR-equipped device in your house. The case meanwhile, has the IR transmitter and looks like a discreet offering from Griffin—not too big and bulky, in other words. Read more…

Gist

This passed Tuesday Gist released an application for the iPhone that brings many of the site’s big features to user’s small pockets. The free app is meant to compliment Gist.com’s people-analyzing and organizing tools, letting users get an alert on upcoming meetings as well as background information on those who they’re meeting with. This includes how important the user’s contacts are, as determined by Gist’s algorithms.

Where users will spend most of their time though is the app’s dashboard, which breaks down the latest news about people and companies they’re corresponding with based on news stories, blog posts, and tweets. This screen doubles as a Read more…

Zipcar App

The iPhone can do many things. Now it can even lock and unlock a car and start the engine.

Cambridge, Mass.-based car-sharing service Zipcar this week launched an app that lets you locate and reserve one of its vehicles, unlock it using the iPhone’s touch-screen and drive it off the lot.

“The iPhone is a pipeline for almost one-third of our members,” says Luke Schneider, Zipcar’s chief technology officer. “This is something they have been asking for.” Read more…

Microsoft Starts Advertising In iPhone Apps

September 15, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

A Twitter user by the name of Raphael Moser noticed over the weekend that Marketplace for Windows Mobile advertisements were starting to appear in his iPhone apps. The ad has the Windows Marketplace for Mobile logo, the name of the store in all caps, and two more words in all caps: “Submit App.” The software giant probably could have put together a slightly more convincing ad, although there really wasn’t that much space to work with.

It’s unclear how widespread this advertisement, or any accompanying ones, are (nobody at the Ars HQ has seen any), but Microsoft definitely has the money to push them out en masse. Even with the proper cash though, it’s not necessarily easy to pull off. There are only ads in some iPhone applications and there isn’t any easy way Microsoft can target all apps with the same ad. Apps on the iPhone run ads from various ad networks, and Microsoft likely advertises through some of those ad networks (our guess is The Deck).

Whether Microsoft targeted iPhone apps specifically is unclear, but it’s completely possible, given the ad’s dimensions and the fact that Microsoft is interested in targeting iPhone developers. Doing so is a smart move for the company; it’s definitely better for Microsoft to embrace the iPhone developer Read more…

Goodbye Soccer Moms, Hello iPhone Moms

An interesting article in the Pioneer Press this weekend illustrates how the “soccer mom” is rapidly being replaced by the “iPhone mom.”

Quote:
When Laurie Jesch-Kulseth gets a craving for fennel while at the supermarket with her two young kids, she doesn’t just grab a batch of the tasty herb and head for the register. She whips out her iPhone, searches the Web for a good recipe incorporating fennel, fetches the extra ingredients and has a family dinner on the table within hours. Ah, the power.

Indeed, the iPhone has revolutionized the convenience with which we lead our lives. But the article inadvertently exposes a reality that many of us may be noticing in our own lives – that the moms we know or call our own typically use their iPhone in the most bare-bones way possible.

The matriarchs chronicled by Laurie Jesch-Kulseth in this Pioneer Press piece showcase how the iPhone helps moms stay organized, check the weather, make shopping lists, program “ICE” into their phones, etc. It really doesn’t get any cooler than that for the new generation of “iPhone moms.” And I, for one Read more…
