Browser Speed Test: Droid Vs. iPhone

October 31, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

In just a few days the Motorola Droid will hit the market. Verizon has been marketing the phone for a few weeks now and launched several ads attacking the iPhone

. The Droid is supposed to be the iPhone killer. But we’ve heard that before. So Engadget made a video showing the browser speeds of both phones.

The iPhone 3GS is still faster, but the Droid can scroll through the page much faster. I don’t like the Droid at all. The iPhone is still the winner and a beautifully designed phone.

Apple Markets Tablet to Australian Media Companies

October 27, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Apple is reportedly in discussions with Australian media companies over including their content on the rumored tablet device.

The Sydney Morning Herald says the tablet is tipped to be a larger version of the iPhone. It is small enough to carry in a handbag but too big to fit in a pocket. It will have a touch screen and be targeted at users who mainly want to surf the web, read books and newspapers or watch movies.

Supposedly Apple sent tablet specifications to the media companies in an effort to figure out if they would be interested in delivering their content on such a platform. None would speak about the device on the record.

Apple reportedly did the same to US companies such as the New York Times last month.

Geohot Starts Looking for an iPhone Unlock

October 27, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Geohot has started looking for an iPhone unlock for the 05.11.07 baseband. He estimates it should take approximately one day to find.

Jody Sanders, a person notorious for selling the Dev-Team’s unlock, has offered Geohot $10,000 for releasing a new one. Sanders maintains that he is not selling the unlock but rather selling the support that comes with it.

If Geohot does find an unlock it will be released free to the entire community regardless of whether Sanders actually pays out. “it’s not really the 10k, i wanted to do it anyway”

The search has already begun and we will keep you up to date on Geohot’s progress.

iPhone Helps AT&T Continue Subscriber Gains On Verizon

October 26, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Verizon and AT&T have both reported their latest quarterly earnings, and the strength of the iPhone has continued to help AT&T close the gap on the market leader.

In its earnings reported Monday morning, Verizon said it now has an estimated total of 89 million subscribers, after adding 1.2 million customers during the September quarter. Last week, AT&T announced it added 2 million wireless subscribers during the same period, bringing its total base of customers to 81.6 million.

AT&T’s 2 million customer increase was the highest third-quarter gain in company history. Officials said nearly 40 percent of the 3.2 million new iPhone activations were customers new to AT&T. That means of the 2 million new customers, roughly 1.28 million were iPhone users. Read more…

RipDev

R.I.P Ripdev it was fun at the beginning. You new jailbreakers probably haven’t heard much of this team but just so you kow they certainly where the big dogs back in the 1.x jailbroken firmware days. When one of the first jailbreaks came out which was the TIFF exploit for 1.x you would have installer.app automatically installed. The best thing about installing and jailbreaking your iphone back then was that all you had to do is go to jailbreakme.com on through your iphone’s web browser, install a package and viola you were done installer.app was installed so you could start installing all of these great 3rd party goodies. AT&T activates 3.2 million iPhones in 3Q

October 23, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Reports of trouble for AT&T’s 3G network have done nothing to keep people from the iPhone in the U.S.

The nation’s second largest wireless carrier announced third-quarter earnings Thursday morning that were full of iPhone goodness. AT&T (T) activated a record 3.2 million iPhones in 3Q, 40% of which went to people new to the company.

Wireless data was the supporting star of the show. Services such as messaging, Internet access and the like were up 33.6% from 3Q of 2008 to $3.6 billion. Data sales now account for 29.4% of AT&T’s wireless revenue.

The company’s earnings were relatively flat, having posted a profit of $3.2 billion, or 54 cents a share for 3Q ‘09 versus $3.23 billion or 55 cents a share for 3Q of ‘08. AT&T did, however, bring in enough to beat analyst expectations. The street was only looking for earnings of 50 cents a share.

Firewall Application Coming To The iPhone Soon

October 21, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

This is the first firewall application for the iPhone and iPod Touch which alerts users whenever an application requires the use the internet.

The application will work in two parts: The first will use MobileSubstrate, it remains active but nonetheless provides a good overall speed, using a little amount of RAM memory. Every time you start an application the app will bring up a menu of information and find out what the app is trying to access or better yet, what details about your phone its trying to send out. You can choose to do the following:

  • Allow the connection only once;
  • Block the connection only once;
  • Always allow the connection;
  • Always lock the connection;
  • Allowing any request for a specific application;
  • Block any request for a specific application.

The second part of the application will be an icon with all of the settings and will allow you to change your settings for the apps you’ve already denied access to the internet if you need to do so.
