Tuaw: MyWi Professional Review

February 10, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Here’s the thing. You know, and I know, that AT&T has not yet enabled tethering in the US, while carriers all across the globe have already given their iPhone customers the ability to use their phones as wireless modems for their laptops. You and I also know that strictly speaking tethering falls outside the normal terms of use for your iPhone data contract — and that there are jailbreak solutions to get around this (hopefully temporary) constraint. Dev Team Releases Redsn0w 0.9.4 For Firmware

February 03, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The iPhone Dev-Team has just released redsn0w 0.9.4 to jailbreak and unlock iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G (No unlock for 3G), iPod touch 1G and iPod touch 2G (older Non-MC models only). Do not update to iPhone 3.1.3 firmware yet if you want to preserve your unlock for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod touch 2G (new models) and iPod touch 3G. This is because the new iPhone 3.1.3 firmware updates baseband to 05.12.01 on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G which makes it impossible to jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3GS and 3G.

Dev-Team Releases Official RedSn0w 0.9

January 31, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The iPhone Dev-Team has released RedSn0w 0.9, a cross-platform jailbreaking, unlocking, and customizing tool for iPhones and iPod touches. This version adds support for the iPod touch 3G as well as IPCC tethering.

How is it different from blackra1n?
- It offers custom logos and verbose boot
- It installs Cydia, afc2, and the IPCC tethering hack without needing separate downloads. Because they’re all installed in one go, redsn0w doesn’t need the multiple levels of installs that blackra1n requires.
- It uses their original Pwnage bootrom exploit for iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod 1G. (Because it’s a bootrom exploit, it can’t be fixed by Apple without a new hardware release.) Note that redsn0w 0.9 does use the USB exploit for iPhone 3GS and iPod 2G+3G running 3.1.2, but that exploit will be fixed in Apple’s next FW release. Read more…

Multi-Touch Trackpad Gaming On A MacBook

January 22, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Illusion Labs, developer of the popular iPhone game Touchgrind, has posted a video demonstrating a Mac version of the game utilizing the multi-touch capabilities of the MacBook’s trackpad. The developer describes it as tech demo and hasn’t committed to releasing it. Illusion Labs is the same developer who demoed their iPhone games on a large multi-touch table in 2009. All of Apple’s notebooks now contain a multi-touch trackpad that could be used for such purposes. In fact, Apple’s multi-touch trackpads can track up to 11 distinct multi-touch presses.

Is Apple Really Going For iPad Trademark??

January 22, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Even though the WSJ pretty much broke the story on next week’s tablet announcement (when the mainstream media prints something as true, it’s true, right?), that hasn’t kept the crazy tablet rumors from coming in. Earlier in the week, MacRumors and the no-comment-on-the-name JesusTablet.com delivered more evidence that Apple is fighting for the “iPad” trademark. While it’s already nailed down the name elsewhere, in the US, Fujitsu actually originally applied for the moniker, though Apple has made the case to the FTC to pick it up since Fujitsu has “abandoned” it and no one else has used it. ‘Minor issues’ Could Result In June Launch For Apple Tablet

January 19, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

While Apple’s tablet is still expected to see a formal introduction at a media event next week, issues with battery life and durability could result in a June launch, an analyst said Tuesday.

In a new note to investors, Shaw Wu with Kaufman Bros. said checks with supply chain sources indicate the launch pattern for the tablet could follow that of the original iPhone in 2007, with a January unveiling and final product shipping to consumers six months later. He said that the June launch could be due to “minor issues” with more work needed on battery life and durability.

However, he said, checks also indicate that a tablet-type device will be introduced next week, at a Jan. 27 event, where the company has advertised it plans to show off its “latest creation.” Wu described the product as being like a “super” iPod touch. Read more…

View All “Get a Mac” Apple Ads In One Place

January 19, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

It’s hard to believe that Apple’s “Get a Mac” ad campaign is already 4 years old. Since its introduction, the campaign has invited both parody and serious responses from competitors. Plus, poor* John Hodgman and Justin Long can’t walk out the door without someone calling them either “Mac” or “PC.”

Some have been better than others (the Christmas ads are always a highlight), and Apple keeps several of each year’s ads on their site. If you’d like to browse the full history of these ads, check out this page assembled by the folks at AdFreak. Read more…
