ATT Hints at June 21st Availability for iPhone 4G

AT&T has begun changing its upgrade eligibility dates for some iPhone customers to June 21st, according to a MobileCrunch report.

This morning they received a report from a reader:

“Not sure if anyone [..] has noticed this same thing, but my Upgrade Eligibility date on my AT&T account switched from 11/21 to 6/21 in the last day or so. I bought a 3GS on launch day last year, and my upgrade date read 11/21 since then. A few other folks in my office have noticed the same changes happening to their accounts as well.” Read more…

Canadian Carrier Claims next-gen iPhone Coming June?

Apple will stick with its June launch for a new iPhone this year, with the next-generation handset scheduled to be released in just a few months, according to one Canadian wireless provider.

According to the Regina Leader-Post, SaskTel, a Saskatchewan-based wireless provider, will offer the next-generation iPhone starting July 1. That will be after the company’s new handset launches in June, said Robert Watson, president and CEO of SaskTel. Read more…

Apple Tweaks App Store, E-book cCategories

Apple has been making last-minute changes to its App Store and iBookstore leading up to the April 3 launch of the iPad, according to a new report.

Citing data from San Francisco mobile media research firm Busted Loop, Forbes reported Thursday that Apple has designated 20 categories for books on its iBookstore, which will be available for download on the iPad. That number has been whittled down from about 35 categories that were listed in February. Read more…

Street Fighter IV Out Now On The iPhone

Tonight at GDC 2010, I went out and stopped by the Capcom Fight Club party here in San Francisco, and while there, Capcom projected the actual App Store interface for sending their Street Fighter IV app to the App Store on various screens around the room. We actually got to see them press the button on the release live and in person, and sure enough, the game is in the App Store right now for $9.99. Read more…

Fujitsu Could Battle Apple Over Ownership of iPad Name

When Apple formally introduced its touchscreen tablet as the iPad Wednesday, it was not the first tech product to carry that moniker — Fujitsu released its own mobile, touchscreen ‘iPAD’ in 2002.

Speaking with The New York Times, Masahiro Yamane, director of public relations for Fujitsu, said it is the company’s understanding that they still own the name ‘iPad.’ Fujitsu is currently consulting with its lawyers over the next steps it may take.

It could become a similar situation to 2007, when Apple formally introduced the iPhone, only to be sued days later by Cisco, which owned the rights to the name. The Linksys iPhone was released just three weeks before the Apple iPhone was introduced at the Macworld San Francisco keynote in early January 2007. Read more…

ATT Dropping Fewer Calls

AT&T says its dropping fewer calls and is seeing an improvement in their network thanks to new carriers at existing cell sites, an ongoing backhaul renovation, and the recent roll-out of 7.2Mbps capability across most of its 3G footprint, reports Engadget.

AT&T claims that dropped calls network-wide has been reduced from 1.41 percent to 1.05 percent between December ’08 and ’09. Read more…

Apple Event to Bring Tablet, iPhone OS 4.0, and iLife 2010??

FOXNews is reporting that the Apple Event on January 27th will focus on three projects: the Tablet, iPhone OS 4.0, and iLife 2010.

The “Come see our latest creation” event was just announced and takes place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 10AM Pacific Time.

I spoke to a source at Apple this morning, before the invite hit my inbox, who said the event would likely focus on three projects: The tablet device, iPhone 4, and a new round of iLife 2010 software. While we won’t see new iPhone hardware just yet, we will see the next-generation software.

Next-Gen iPhone Rumored To Have Magic Mouse-Like Touch Panel

Apple will introduce a new iPhone in 2010 that will employ a touch-sensitive plastic back casing similar to the one used on the company’s new Magic Mouse, one analyst has said.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Robert Chen with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said the new iPhone will go into production as early as April, and will be available to customers in June or July. He said the plastic back panel of the phone could have a touch-sensitive solid shell, much like on the Magic Mouse.

Apple Tablet Called ‘iPhone On Steroids’

Clues on Apple’s forthcoming tablet continue to surface as the device is expected to debut this month, with a new report referring to the device as an “iPhone on steroids.”

Citing a close contact within Apple, Boy Genius Report on Wednesday issued a report with alleged new details and specifics on Apple’s 10-inch touchscreen device. The source said the device has an internal model number of K48AP and sports an “incredibly fast” ARM-based processor.

What kind of ARM chip remains unknown, though many have speculated that the reference Cortex-A9 design would be a likely candidate for any new hardware. However, one analyst recently claimed that the device would sport a Cortex-A8-based chip with a speed of about 1GHz. Read more…
