DevTeam: Only Tethered Jailbreak May Be Possible In New Ipod Touch and 3GS

The bootrom for new 8GB iPod Touch shows that it’s still got 24K overflow…it *may* simply need some address tweaks

Update #1 10/17/2009

We can now confirm that the new 8GB iPod touch is not vulnerable to 24Kpwn. It took just 6 bytes for Apple to fix this:
load_module+16 43 68 LDR R3, [R0,#bdevImg.totalSize]
load_module+18 9A 42 CMP bufsize, R3
load_module+1A 13 D3 BCC FAIL find_named_image(illb): 000100d8 00024100 696c6c62 696d6733
dataSize totalSize illb img3 Given how small the fix is, it seems likely that it was also applied to that updated bootrom of very recent iPhone 3GS devices. We’ll be able to confirm this once we have an actual one of those in hand.

Update #2 10/17/2009

Confirmation that the new 8GB iPod touch is at least a tethered jailbreak. This device doesn’t require personalized img3 files in the way that the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3G do. For this reason, it will “always” be jailbreakable (no need to rush and get your ECID signed hashes like you do for the 3GS and ipt3G). But for the foreseeable future, it will be a tethered jailbreak only.

Zune Hd vs New iPod Touch: Let The Battle Begin

September 17, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Our equal and opposite, Phil Nickinson over at WMExperts, has just provided the equal and opposite to our just-posted iPod touch G3 hardware review — a hands-on with the Microsoft Zune HD.

t’s my first foray into the Zune ecosystem, so I have a bit of a learning curve, and bear with me. But without giving away the farm, I’ll say this: If this is the direction in which Windows Mobile is moving, we all have much to look forward to.

Part 1 covers the desktop software, Quickplay (think genius), the apps, Zune marketplace, what’s in the box, the hardware, the screen, and teases Part 2 (of course).

Check out the battle HERE, then remember to join us for iPhone Live! tonight, as Phil will be our special guest, and we’ll take the Zune HD one on one with the great one — the iPod touch.

New iPod Touch Speed Tests Up to 50% Faster Performance

September 16, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

At Apple’s “It’s Only Rock and Roll” media event last week, the company introduced new iPod touch models with 32 GB and 64 GB capacities, advertising the devices as offering “up to 50 percent faster performance”. Macworld has performed speed tests comparing the new iPod touch to the previous-generation model, and found that on a number of tasks the new model does meet or exceed Apple’s performance claims.

The speed tests conducted were similar to ones run in June on the iPhone 3GS, and while the new iPhone running Apple’s just-released iPhone OS 3.1 was not included in the latest comparison, the new iPod touch appears to even be slightly faster at some tasks than the iPhone 3GS.

But it’s not just in benchmarks such as these where the new iPod wins out. Just as the iPhone 3GS was faster than the iPhone 3G at everything, the new iPod touch feels much faster at any task you throw at it: applications launch (and quit) faster, Web pages load more quickly, processor-intensive games and programs perform better — you name it.

We’ll be testing the latest iPod touch’s performance — compared to both the previous touch and the iPhone 3GS — for our official review, but it’s clear that Apple has beefed up its newest touchscreen device.

Dev Team Releases 3.1 Jailbreak

September 16, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News
3 • fun!

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques (that complicate the 3GS upgrade process) this will be a multipart release. This release starts with PwnageTool 3.1 for Mac OS X – this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), the iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G. NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR 2G/3G IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it – we’ll release when we have something ready.

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts.
  2. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw
  3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.
  6. This app is suitable for the recent 3.1 release.
  7. This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
  8. PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

The Reason New iPod Touch Didn’t Get A Camera

September 15, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

ipod-touch-leak-reveal-rm-eng

Everyone, including Steve Jobs, has very reasonable sounding theories as to why the third gen iPod touch camera was removed. Rather than rehash it again, however, we thought we’d let our minds wonder into parody, and consider what might have happened in a world only slightly more cartoonish than ours…

Steve Jobs, fresh from his recent leave of absence, comes crashing back into Apple’s Cupertino campus, and after fixing the typography on the iPhone 3G S 3GS, tweaking some pixels on the Snow Leopard UI, and spending time meditating deep in the iTablet vault, he heads over to the scorched closet that used to be reserved for iPhone A2DP testing…

“64GB a go?” he demands. “Good”

“Is it thinner?” grumble. “Next year…”

“What about those ultra-tiny auto-focus 3 megapixel Read more…
