Though previous studies found the iPhone was outselling Windows Mobile devices and had a greater presence online, Apple’s handset finally unseated Microsoft devices in terms of overall use in October, a new study has found.

The latest survey of mobile operating system marketshare from research firm comScore found that the iPhone spiked to nearly 9 million U.S. users by the month of October, pushing it well past Microsoft’s total of just over 7 million users. In July, the two companies were about even in total mobile OS market share. The latest survey data was obtained by FierceWireless.

Neowin has released a report that claims Microsoft is working on two new applications for the AppStore, one being a Bing application and the other for Windows Live Messenger on the iPhone. Unfortunately the applications won’t be released until March, which should time nicely with their release of Windows Live Wave 4 updates.

Microsoft already has two applications in the AppStore called Tag Reader and Seadragon, so these wouldn’t be the first apps microsoft has brought to the iPhone. This comes as no surprise, as it’s quite clear that this point that the iPhone marketshare is much more demanding than the Windows Mobile market. Microsoft understands it needs to compete multi-platform for its web and cloud based applications if it wants to maintain and grow market share, heck they even have Blackberry apps available.

The Apple Magic Mouse drivers have been hacked to enable multi-touch support on Windows 7, according to uneasysilence.com.

Thanks to a little hackery from Apple’s Bluetooth Update the Magic Mouses driver was extracted via WinRar resulting in a 32bit version and a 64bit version that you can install on any ordinary Windows PC that will enable all the scrolling ‘magic’ of the Magic Mouse.

A Twitter user by the name of Raphael Moser noticed over the weekend that Marketplace for Windows Mobile advertisements were starting to appear in his iPhone apps. The ad has the Windows Marketplace for Mobile logo, the name of the store in all caps, and two more words in all caps: “Submit App.” The software giant probably could have put together a slightly more convincing ad, although there really wasn’t that much space to work with.

It’s unclear how widespread this advertisement, or any accompanying ones, are (nobody at the Ars HQ has seen any), but Microsoft definitely has the money to push them out en masse. Even with the proper cash though, it’s not necessarily easy to pull off. There are only ads in some iPhone applications and there isn’t any easy way Microsoft can target all apps with the same ad. Apps on the iPhone run ads from various ad networks, and Microsoft likely advertises through some of those ad networks (our guess is The Deck).

Whether Microsoft targeted iPhone apps specifically is unclear, but it’s completely possible, given the ad’s dimensions and the fact that Microsoft is interested in targeting iPhone developers.
