Canadian Carrier Claims next-gen iPhone Coming June?

Apple will stick with its June launch for a new iPhone this year, with the next-generation handset scheduled to be released in just a few months, according to one Canadian wireless provider.

According to the Regina Leader-Post, SaskTel, a Saskatchewan-based wireless provider, will offer the next-generation iPhone starting July 1. That will be after the company’s new handset launches in June, said Robert Watson, president and CEO of SaskTel. Read more…

NASA creates prototype chemical sensor

Jing Li, a physical scientist at the NASA Ames Research Center, has used the hardware connectivity made available in iPhone OS 3.0 to create a “compact, low-cost, low-power, high speed nanosensor-based chemical sensing” external attachment. The prototype device, which is said to be about the size of a postage stamp, connects to the iPhone through its 30-pin dock connector.

iPhone accessories can prompt automatic App Store downloads

At least one third-party iPhone and iPod touch hardware accessory now reportedly takes advantage of the 3.0 software connectivity with automatic App Store download prompts.

One of the first accessories to sport the new feature is the new iTrip with App Support from Griffin Technology. First discovered by iLounge, the new capability automatically informs users that the necessary application is not installed on the iPhone or iPod touch. It then offers to connect to the App Store and automatically download the software, with the user’s permission.

“Upon acceptance, the iPhone or iPod touch then takes users to a new ‘For This Accessory’ page on the App Store, with a direct link to the necessary app’s listing, from which they can download and install the application,” the report said. Read more…
