How to Update Your 2G iPhone to 3.0 Without Losing Activation, Unlock

June 18, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

If you click the Update button in iTunes to install the 3.0 firmware you will not loose your unlock. (2G iPhones ONLY).

HOWEVER, if you are using the 2G iPhone on an unofficial carrier you may loose your activation. This means that will your network will be detected but you will not be able to use your iPhone.

You will loose your activation if you used QuickPwn to jailbreak your iPhone. If you used PwnageTool you will not.

If you are super excited about iPhone 3.0 and wish to update immediately, either make sure you jailbroke with PwnageTool or rejailbreak using PwnageTool and then do the update.

Otherwise wait for a little bit and the iPhone Dev-Team will release new PwnageTool and QuickPwn utilities shortly.

What to do with that old iPhone?

June 18, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

At first I was going to wait until December when I could upgrade my 3G iPhone to a 3G S for the best price, but the thought of that better camera resolution and video was slowly gnawing away at my resolve. I wanted a new iPhone (damn you Apple!), but I had to do something about my current model. Putting it in the drawer that has become my ‘Museum of Obsolete Technology’ didn’t seem like a great (or cost-effective) solution. Selling it to friends is tough because most already have iPhones and are in the same boat I’m in. We’ve even offered some good tips in the past here at TUAW.

Then I remembered that when I upgraded to the iPhone 3G I sold my iPhone online. eBay wasn’t offering much back then, so after some research I settled on NextWorth. They are one of a number of companies that will give you real cash for gadgets, and they had a good reputation. Prices depend on demand and change daily. With my old first generation iPhone, I sent it in with all my accessories and received a check back in 2-3 weeks. It was all pretty painless.

I checked them again this time, and they were offering US$280.00 for my 16GB iPhone. I’ve gathered all my accessories and will send it in when I get the new iPhone. That 280 clams makes the whole trade up quite a bit less painful. I also like this method rather than selling to a friend because of the “something is sure to go wrong with the phone the day after I sell it” factor.

Our readers will have their own stories and suggestions. Let’s hear them — and one tip. Before you engage with any company try a site like ReSeller Ratings or do some targeted Google searches to see how other people did with them. I might have gotten more money for the phone using another method, but the route I went has no risk and offered a reasonable trade in value.

Other online companies that buy iPhones include Gazelle, BuyMyTronics and CashforiPhones. That’s not an exhaustive list, and be sure to check reputations. Searching on “sell your iPhone” at Google is a good place to start. There’s also Craigslist, but you have to be careful. There have been a lot of rip-offs.

One final tip. When you sell the little darling, be sure to do a secure erase first. It takes a while, but protects you from selling your data along with your phone.

I’m looking forward to the new iPhone but hate the thought of buying the next model and the next. What’s a geek to do?

iPhone 3G S Reviews Pop Up Simultaneously

June 18, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Reviews of the iPhone 3G S appeared simultaneously on Gizmodo and Engadget at exactly one o’clock.

Seems like Apple had this all planned out as iLounge predicted.

So with that being said click on either review you would like to read.

Gizmodo: The iPhone 3GS is the best all-around smartphone available. If you’re looking for a refined, augmented version of what you already know, a phone that, not for nothing, runs all the tens of thousands of apps on the App Store, choose the iPhone 3GS.

Engadget: Ultimately we’re not saying it’s time to jump ship, but we’ve come to expect a bit more pedal to the floor from Apple — you’ve raised the bar guys, now it’s time to jump over it.

Apple Delays Early 3GS Shipments

June 17, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Several readers are reporting that their potentially early iPhone 3G S shipments are being intentionally delayed by Apple. The actual delivery date may still be early (the 18th) but the information is continuing to change. While originally scheduled for delivery as early as Wednesday, June 17th, many individuals have noted the following message appear on their shipment tracking:The receiver requested a hold for a future delivery date. UPS will attempt delivery on date requested
Apple has done similar things in the past to time shipments with official launch dates.

UltraSn0w 3.0 Preview

June 17, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

So to recap what Musclenerd said in the live demo the unlock for firmware 3.0 is now called UltraSn0w, and the exploit was found by Oranav in which he was tinkering with minicom and he made the iPhones baseband crash/freeze which in turn the iPhone Dev Team took advantage of that exploit and viola UltraSn0w. UltraSn0w is similar to yellowsnow by the way it is injected and you will be able to install it through cydia on its release date June 19th. Thanks Oranav for finding the exploit and thanks Dev Team for using it to help out the iPhone community.

iPhone 3G S orders set to be delivered tomorrow??

June 17, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Waiting days in the blistering sun for a phone that more level-headed folks (that is, not us) will be able to get by simply waltzing into a store a few days later just isn’t what it used to be, is it? As iPhones make the inevitable transition from wildly-anticipated objects of lust to commodities, it seems that Apple’s putting progressively less effort into carefully orchestrating and micro-managing launches — and if you want solid proof of that, look no further than the shipping tracking numbers coming off of the online Apple Store’s order status site where you’ll find that some iPhone 3G S units should be in buyers’ hands tomorrow. If you’re counting, that’d be a full two days before the official release of this Friday — and while we suppose the company could have some agreement in place with its carriers to hold onto the units until the official release, we’re not giving UPS that much credit.

The First Actual iPhone 3GS Video

June 17, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

This video showed up on Mydock.com,  the first video shot by a consumer/insider ysing the new iPhone 3GS

  • 2048 x 1536 is the resolution of the pictures from the camera
  • The oleophobic screen of the new iPhone is noticeable and does seem to make a difference with fingerprints.
  • “Speed is impressive”
  • Video recording quality is just ok, dependent of ambient light.

iPhone Dev Team Update For 3.0

June 16, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News
Big week!

As anyone reading this blog must already know, this is the big week where Apple releases their official 3.0 FW to the public (Wednesday), and then the new iPhone2,1 hardware, aka the iPhone 3GS (Friday).

On Tuesday evening (just before the big Apple release) we’ll do a live demo of the yellowsn0w carrier unlock working on official 3.0 firmware. The actual link for the feed will be twittered by @MuscleNerd (see our twitter feeds to the right) and also placed here when the feed starts.  The demo should answer everything you need to know about the new yellowsn0w.  But it’s good news for iPhone 3G unlockers everywhere.

Meanwhile, we’re in the middle of testing our PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools, which will work with iTunes 8.2. The jailbreak of course continues to work on 3.0 for all devices it ever worked on, thanks due the Pwnage 2.0 technique released last summer.   Our tools will be released no sooner than the Apple release (just in case!).

P.S. For the new iPhone 3GS, please don’t expect periodic updates about any progress we have or don’t have.  Nothing gives Apple the upper hand like someone tweeting or blogging or partial hack results.  That’s not how cat & mouse is played :)  That’s how the cat gets fed.

Live Demo YellowSn0w Unlock 3.0 Tue Eve

June 16, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The Dev-Team has once again won this cat and mouse battle with apple. MuscleNerd & the Dev Team tweeted earlier that they will be demoing the yellowsn0w unlock for 3.0 Tuesday Evening, so for those of you who desperately need the unlock for iPhone 3g you can let out that sigh of relief. What really amazes me about this team and all of its members is that they don’t ask for money, they don’t ask for publicity, they in my opinion do this for fun and the challenge but of course to show off their major skills ;) . Once again thanks dev team for making the iPhone scene worth talking about.
