AT&T Fails To Deploy iPhone Tethering & 3G MicroCell In 09

December 31, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Facing intense criticism of its mobile network coverage from a variety of sources, AT&T has both failed to deploy its iPhone tethering strategy and to successfully get its 3G MicroCell product into widespread distribution.

New tethering services would exacerbate AT&T’s existing network capacity problems, but availability of the 3G MicroCell would help to solve localized service holes for the company. The product is still confined to limited testing in just a few cities, which perplexingly do not include the two markets that are so infamous in terms of poor service that AT&T’s CEO has made apologetic remarks addressing them directly: New York City and San Francisco. Gruber Shares His Thoughts on the Apple Tablet

December 31, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

John Gruber from Daring Fireball has posted with his thoughts on the much rumored Apple Tablet.

Here’s the thimbleful of information I have heard regarding The Tablet (none of which has changed in six months): The Tablet project is real, it has you-know-who’s considerable undivided attention, and everyone working on it has dropped off the map. I don’t know anyone who works at Apple who doubts these things; nor do I know anyone at Apple who knows a whit more. I don’t know anyone who’s seen the hardware or the software, nor even anyone who knows someone else who has seen the hardware or software.

The cone of silence surrounding the project is, so far as I can tell, complete.

Gruber continues to hypothesis about what the tablet will do, where it fits in the Apple product line, and what operating system it will run. Hit the link below to read the entire post.

Apple January 26th Event ‘Confirmed’

December 30, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

FOXNews.com claims to have received confirmation from a “source inside Apple” that the company will in fact be holding a media event on January 26th in San Francisco. According to the source, the “big” event will focus on the “mobility space”, suggesting an iPhone, iPod touch, or, as many people expect, tablet announcement.

Evidence of an 8GB iPhone 3GS?

December 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

A German iPhone user has reported receiving a refurbished iPhone 3G in a box labeled for an 8GB iPhone 3GS. “David,” a moderator on the apfeltalk forums, has posted a photo (Translated Link) of the box’s serial number/IMEI label, which clearly says “iPhone 3GS v2.2, 8GB;” iPhone 3G S also appears on the box’s contents label. David reports that the phone inside is indeed an iPhone 3G, running software 3.0.1, despite the box’s markings. Evidence of an 8GB iPhone 3GS model appeared as early as this August in a supposed internal Rogers Wireless memo and on the carrier’s website; it is expected that this new low-end model would replace the current 8GB iPhone 3G in Apple’s lineup.

CNBC To Air ‘Planet of the Apps’ On Jan. 7th

December 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

I was just watching CNBC and saw a commercial for a special called “Planet of the Apps: A Handheld Revolution!” The one-hour program looks at how the launch of the Apple iPhone in June of 2007 gave birth to a revolution in mobile technology. The main site lists some highlight from the show, including a piece on Heroes actor Greg Grunberg and his “second job” as an app developer (he’s one of the people behind the Yowza! app). From the press release: Read more…

Fix Cydia Crashing Dec. 28

December 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

There is a problem with a particular source this morning. Signs point to it being Zodttd’s repo sending data that Cydia has a problem with. This causes Cydia to go into a crashing loop.

You should NOT need to restore your firmware to fix this problem. Please have patience, a fix is being worked on. If the coming solutions do not help there is still the possibility that a restore may be needed.
Update #1: Some good advice and instructions in the comments below. You can also try the FIXES AND SUGGESTIONS HERE, as the problem is the same as it was then. You must remove the zodttd source list that is causing the problem.

Update #2: A quick fix for some (works only if you have apt7 installed)

  • Log-in as root using MobileTerminal or SSH and run this command:
  • apt-get update
  • This will update your lists and then Cydia should work.

AT&T Resumes Online iPhone Sales To New York City Residents

December 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

AT&T has resumed taking iPhone orders from New York City residents through its website after blocking the sale of the handsets to New Yorkers this past weekend for reasons the carrier has been unwilling to explain in detail.

The sales suspension drew hundreds of headlines from technology websites on Monday, fueling suspicions that the move was yet another sign that the exclusive US iPhone carrier was unable to support the brunt of the handset’s popularity in dense metropolitan areas.
