January 26, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

It had to happen. Somebody had to be the first to announce software for a still-nonexistent piece of hardware.

A lot of us in the business of reporting Apple news and rumors were waiting for the shoe to drop on tablet-related software announcements. Sure enough, developer Ben Gottlieb has taken the bold step of announcing an “iPad” (please let that not be the name…) app in development.

Gottlieb’s Stand Alone, Inc. announced today that they’re working on a larger version of their popular Crosswords iPhone app. As Gottlieb mentioned, “The main constraint in developing a Crossword app for mobile devices has been the distinct lack of screen real estate. We have been anticipating the Apple tablet as the greatest piece of hardware for App developers since iPhone itself, and Crosswords will be even better on the new device.” Read more…

The information comes from “a maker of components going into the Apple tablet,” according to analyst Matt Thornton. “It’s been in the supply chain for a while and entered full production this month. A couple of suppliers actually had weaker Decembers than they would have expected because production was pushed back a little bit,” he said in an interview.

Apple Tablet Causes Shortage of 10.1inch LED, OLED Screens?

January 12, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Apple may have pre-ordered the entire available supply of 10.1-inch multi-touch display LCD and OLED screens for its upcoming tablet, according to TGDaily.

“We were designing a product for a customer and we needed 10 inch screens, but we’ve been trying for months and can’t get one from any of the Asian suppliers,” an anonymous designer for a firm wishing to remain nameless told TG Daily.

“We were told that Apple pre-ordered them all. All 10 inch LCDs, and all 10 inch OLEDs too,” their source continued, redundantly adding “it’s for the Apple tablet.”

Fingerworks Content Pulled Before Apple Tablet Announcement

January 11, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The content of Fingerworks.com has been removed this week after remaining online for nearly 5 years after the acquisition of the company by Apple. The removal seems to correspond with the impending announcement of an Apple tablet later this month. One possible explanation is that Apple will finally be implementing many of the same advanced multi-touch keyboard gestures that were originally pioneered by Fingerworks.

Up until last week, Fingerworks.com retained photographs and details about their multi-touch keyboards and gesture pads they released for Macs years ago. In fact an old press release describes the benefits of their Multi-Touch system in a combination keyboard/touchpad: Read more…

Apple Tablet Has Aluminum Casing With A Q2 Launch Coming?

January 08, 2010 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Suppliers for the Apple Tablet have begun shipping touchscreen panels and will start delivering aluminum casings next month, according to Reuters sources, implying a second-quarter product launch.

AVY Precision Technology Inc, a Taiwanese manufacturer of covers for electronic products, will begin production of the cases in February, two sources familiar with the situation said on Friday.

TPK Solutions, an unlisted touch screen panel maker also based in Taiwan will also supply panels for the product, a third source said, on top of those already being manufactured by another Taiwan company, Wintek Corp.

“Production of the cases will begin in February, so everything points to a second-quarter launch right now,” said one of the sources. “It doesn’t take that long for the company to assemble the PC together, but a second-quarter shipment date is what we’re looking at now.”

Gruber Shares His Thoughts on the Apple Tablet

December 31, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

John Gruber from Daring Fireball has posted with his thoughts on the much rumored Apple Tablet.

Here’s the thimbleful of information I have heard regarding The Tablet (none of which has changed in six months): The Tablet project is real, it has you-know-who’s considerable undivided attention, and everyone working on it has dropped off the map. I don’t know anyone who works at Apple who doubts these things; nor do I know anyone at Apple who knows a whit more. I don’t know anyone who’s seen the hardware or the software, nor even anyone who knows someone else who has seen the hardware or software.

The cone of silence surrounding the project is, so far as I can tell, complete.

Gruber continues to hypothesis about what the tablet will do, where it fits in the Apple product line, and what operating system it will run. Hit the link below to read the entire post.

7 inch Apple Tablet is Definitely Announcing in January?

December 23, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

A very connected source has told BGR that they have very solid information about Apple’s upcoming tablet.

It has been widely reported recently that the size of the tablet is 10″, but there was also talk about a 7″ model. Our connect said there is 100% a 7″ Apple tablet, to be announced in January, and whether this is in addition to a 10″ model, they don’t know. Would we bet the farm on this? No, but they’ve been amazingly accurate for us in the past and as usual, Apple rumors seem to get more interesting…

The Financial Times also believes the announcement for the Apple Tablet will come in January. The WSJ points to a March release date.
