SlingPlayer Targeted in AT&T TOS Update

April 30, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

Where is SlingPlayer? Why hasn’t it been approved yet? When is it coming?

If AT&T has anything to say about the issue SlingPlayer will never see the light of day on the App Store. Two weeks ago a rumor started circulating that AT&T was stopping SlingPlayer from being approved. The rumor started because AT&T’s TOS were updated to prohibit “customer initiated redirection of television or other video or audio signals via any technology from a fixed location to a mobile device.” This was later removed by AT&T and calimed to be a mistake.

Some weeks later SlingPlayer is still missing from the App Store and it is becoming clearer that AT&T is most likely influencing the App Store approval process with their latest TOS update.

Quote:
While most common uses for Intranet browsing, email and intranet access are permitted by your data plan, there are certain uses that cause extreme network capacity issues and interference with the network and are therefore prohibited. Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation . . .downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, redirecting television signals for viewing on Personal Computers, web broadcasting, and/or for the operation of servers, telemetry devices….

SlingPlayer redirects television signals. AT&T’s TOS for their wireless broadband network specifically prohibits that. It isn’t looking good for SlingPlayer.

[via slingcommunity] thanks for the tip JazJon

Note: I also wanted to let you guys know that I know someone that knows someone special and slingplayer is in the process of getting approved, as apple doesn’t see anything wrong with it but at&t does. So Apple is pretty much talking with at&t to get it approved.

Phone 3.0: On-Device App Download from Multiple iTunes Accounts?

April 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

We mentioned the new Store Setting tab just a short time ago. daveizzle on Twitter made the observation that this functionality makes it seem like you could theoretically sign into one account, download apps, sign out, sign into another account, and download apps from that account as well, all onto the same iPhone or iPod touch. Boom. Support for multiple iTunes accounts right on the device.

Why would that be interesting? Say your spouse had already bought a $9.99 app. App Store lets the same account re-download that app to the iPhone without a second charge, so it becomes a way to “share” applications (as long as you trust the person enough to put your iTunes password into their device). Another scenario would be a UK users wanting to download a US-only app. They could log into a US account, download the region-restricted app, then log out and log back into their own, local account.

Note: This has been possible all along via syncing from iTunes. Any apps downloaded from any account would transfer over to the iPhone. This merely extends the purchase and/or download process to the iPhone, further releasing iTunes tethered hold.

(Of course, since you can’t re-download music for free, and you can’t download movie or TV show videos directly to the iPhone, this pertains only to App Store content — likely to prevent Big Media heads from ’sploding).

There is only one way I know of being able to use this and that is instead of restoring the firmware, you can upgrade the firmware and stay unlocked and activated. Try at your own risk

Note: This is of no use to regular iPhone users. If you have a dev account go ahead and enjoy but as of right now there is no jailbreak by the dev team or unofficial jailbreak by the russians ;)

Thanks to the guys over at xsellize

How Much Have You Spent In The Appstore

April 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

Here is another poll for you guys. What i’ve been wondering is how much my readers have spent on appstore apps. Personally I’ve spent about 50 to 70 dollars and I don’t even use the apps that much so I think I wasted some money, it’s just that the apps look sooo tempting

Rumour:Verizon Getting Apple iPhone “Lite” and “Media Pad”?!

April 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

According to a report by USA Today, “Verizon (VZ) and Apple (AAPL) are discussing the possible development of an iPhone for Verizon, with the goal of introducing it next year, people familiar with the situation say.” This comes as a bit of a shock after Apple COO Tim Cook pretty much shot down the possibility of an iPhone ever hitting CDMA when he said:

Quote:
We view AT&T as a very good partner, the best wireless provider in the U.S. Very happy to do business with them. They have done a good job with the iPhone. We have no plans to change it. Technically, Verizon is on CDMA. We decided to focus on one phone for the entire world, which means you have to go down the GSM route. CDMA doesn’t have a life after a certain point in time

Tim Cook’s words made it seem pretty clear the Apple and Verzion didn’t have any future together. Sure CDMA is aging and not where Apple wants to go in the future but what about LTE? LTE is the future of mobile phone communications here in the US and according to a report on unwired Verizon will have full LTE deployment to their 80 million customers by 2010. There are already LTE trials by Verizon going on in the US and so far the top speeds have been a blazing fast 60 Mbps. If I were Apple I would be interested in selling a 60 Mbps iPhone.

Might as well add the Businessweek apparently thinks Apple and Verizon are going to be releasing an iPhone Lite and Media Pa.

Quote:

One device is a smaller, less expensive calling device described by a person who has seen it as an “iPhone lite.” The other is a media pad that would let users listen to music, view photos, and watch high-definition videos, the person says. It would place calls over a Wi-Fi connection. One of these devices may be introduced as early as this summer, one person says.

iPhone 3.0-Paste Long Pswrds Into Wifi Settings

April 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

.

Back before the iPhone, I was using one of GRC.com’s long, pseudo-random passwords for my WPA-protected Wi-Fi network. Typing it into iPhone 1.x, even iPhone 2.x was a non-starter, however, so I shrank it down considerably.
Similar security-conscious folks have lamented not only the lack of copy and paste on the iPhone, but especially the lack of “paste-into-password field” to support just those kinds of super-secure strings.

Well, it looks like we might be getting them — along with the previously discussed copy and paste features, in iPhone 3.0.

Whether this makes it or not into the final release version is something only time will tell (because Apple, of course, isn’t saying).

But we want it.
