Change the Theme on an iPhone 3GS without Jailbreaking

June 30, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

I know some of you are bummed that you can’t jailbreak your iPhone 3GS. Well, if you are craving a new theme, you’re in luck…Apple gave you an option. You can invert your iPhone so that it is white on black instead of black on white. Apple says it is for people who have difficulty seeing black on white or to make it easier to see at night. I say, they are secretly coming over to the dark side! If you would like to change your iPhone’s theme so that it is White on Black just head over to your stock Settings application, the General Option, the Accessibility option and you will see a White on Black feature….just turn that guy On.

When you turn it on, it does change EVERYTHING. All your application will now be inverted as well as your Photos (they will look like negatives). It is pretty crazy! This feature is only available on the iPhone 3GS. Check out the images below…yes, images, screenshots do not show-up in the White on Black mode.

Bell and Telus to Carry the iPhone This Fall?

June 30, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The Toronto Star has learned that both Bell and Telus have negotiated deals with Apple to carry the iPhone as early as this fall.

One source suggested the price being paid by the networks “is going to hurt.”

Currently, Rogers is the the only GSM carrier in Canada and consequently has used their position to price gouge customers. The situation has got so bad that recently the Canadian government auctioned off some cellular spectrum to allow for a new carrier to enter the market. The new carrier, Global Wireless, is set to launch in the 4th quarter of this year.

If Telus and Bell also are ready with their HSPA network by the fall it could mean some serious trouble to Rogers. With four carriers offering the iPhone prices will hopefully fall to a more reasonable rate and dissatisfied customers will finally be able to leave Rogers/Fido behind.

iPhone making a splash in the arts

June 30, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Not too long ago we told you about an artist creating a cover for the New Yorker magazine using a paint program on the iPhone. Now an Australian photographer has won an award for a photo he took on his iPhone.

Steve Turner created a rather striking collection of images he put together, and manipulated to create a print that caught the eye of the judges at the Photo Marketing Association show in Sydney.

I tried to contact the photographer, and we had a brief email back and forth. He’s traveling so I don’t have too many details and the time difference between us has made communications spotty. His messages, of course, are all coming via iPhone. Steve says he has about $200,000 worth of camera equipment but loves shooting on the iPhone. He used CameraBag for the effects, and scaled the photos up on his Mac at his studio. If you go to Steve’s web site you’ll see the photo pop up. It’s the photo with 9 small images and a larger image of a car. His non- iPhone work is pretty impressive as well. My guess is the image was taken with the older 2MP camera, allowing for time to submit his photo for consideration, but it is impressive.

There’s just no predicting how creative people can be even if the equipment is not top notch. As I remember learning some years ago from an instructor in a photography course when I was complaining about my little camera, ‘If Ansel Adams uses my camera, he gets great pictures. If I get his camera, not so much.’ Great lesson for us all, and congrats Steve.

Dev Team Can Jailbreak, But Will Wait!!

June 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

Latest Update From Dev Team Blog

Spock said it best: “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few…”

Summary:

We can jailbreak the 3GS right now.  But making our jailbreak public at this point in time would benefit relatively few people.  It would in fact be detrimental to many more people than it would help.  So we feel it’s best to keep our version of the jailbreak out of Apple’s sights for the time being.

Details:

If you already have a 3GS phone and have already done a full USB dump or captured your img3’s signed with your ECID, then you’re in great shape.  You will always be able to jailbreak.  But many people who plan on getting a 3GS do not yet have one. For instance, many people are waiting for their existing contracts to mature to the point where they get a price break on the 3GS.  Many people are trying to sell their 3G before they can buy the 3GS.  There are parts of the globe where you can’t even buy a 3GS yet! The reasons are varied, but they are many.

The nature of the 3GS hardware allows Apple to stop IPSWs from being usable unless you’ve already gotten the signed chunks they send to you based on your ECID (a unique chip ID).  You cannot get these signed chunks without knowing your ECID, and you don’t know your ECID until you’ve bought your 3GS.

The jailbreak requires at least one signed iBoot-family img3 for your device.  And that iBoot needs to have an exploitable bug.  It’s an all-or-nothing deal…you either have your signed exploitable iBoot ready to use, for now and forever — always jailbreakable — or you have nothing.

Here’s the critical point, the reason why we’re delaying our version of the jailbreak: Once the jailbreak is out, Apple will fix the iBoot-family bug we use to accomplish it.  They will simply stop signing the old iBoots and only sign the fixed ones.  If you bought your phone after Apple has done this, there’s nothing you can do…the jailbreak isn’t going to work for you.

It is possible that Apple will find the bug we use without our handing it to them on a silver platter (via a public jailbreak).  In that case, we will have delayed our jailbreak for “nothing”.  But we’d rather be safe than sorry!

Apple is surely coming out with a 3.0.1 firmware release shortly. They need to fix ultrasn0w.  They need to fix some UI issues.  3.0 is buggy and 3.0.1 is coming.  We’re going to wait and see what 3.0.1 brings before figuring out the release date for our version of the jailbreak.

In the meantime, we have some remaining 3.0 jailbreak issues to investigate, including push notification.  Thanks for being patient with us while we took a 3GS “timeout”!

Activate MMS For 2g iPhone

June 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

A new package has showed up on the Ispazio repo, it is called “ActivateMMS2G”. Obiviously by the name of the package you know that iPhone 2g user’s prayers have been answered, this package once installed will activate the official Apple mms function for the iPhone 2g. Apple and AT&T had been saying that the first generation iPhone didn’t have the hardware to send mms, when all the hardware you need on a phone is a camera and a messaging app. In your face AT&T!!! Intstructions to install and use this package are below:

  1. Open cydia and find or search for “ActivateMMS2G”
  2. After you install it reboot your iPhone
  3. Now you will have the mms settings in settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network>
  4. Enter your mms settings
  5. Reboot your iPhone
  6. Go into your sms app and you will see the camera button
  7. Enjoy MMS

Note: You have to make sure and have the right mms settings for your carrier, I posted a list of mms settings earlier this week so search for it or keep scrolling down.

Sony Designing Mobile Phone/PSP Hybrid to Better Compete Against iPhone?

June 29, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

As recently as May Sony has itself stated that a PSP phone “could happen,” and now a report from Nikkei business daily states that Sony is planning on putting together a team as early as next month to build product that would act as a combination of a PSP and a Sony Ericsson handset. It makes plenty of sense, both as a differentiation from Nintendo and as a confrontation of the looming iPhone threat — and hey, it might also act as a decent salve over the lukewarm reception of the pricey PSPgo. Unfortunately, if Sony is just about to get started on this, we likely wouldn’t be looking at any resulting product for a while to come. Sony declined comment according to Reuters, which doesn’t mean a whole lot, but it’s worth keeping in mind that we’ve been hearing this sort of rumoring since back when the N-Gage (as a product) was still almost relevant.

TOKYO (Reuters) – Sony Corp is considering developing a cellphone-game gear hybrid in a bid to better compete with Apple Inc’s highly popular iPod and iPhone, the Nikkei business daily said on Saturday.
The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate launched its first Walkman three decades ago, dominating the portable music player market, but it has been running far behind the iPod and iPhone in recent years.
Sony plans to set up a project team as early as July to develop a new product that combines functions of its portable game player and Sony Ericsson’s mobile phones, the Nikkei said.
Sony Ericsson is a cellphone joint venture between Sony and Sweden’s Ericsson.
A growing number of game-makers including Capcom Co Ltd and Square Enix Holdings are now offering software for the iPod and iPhone to take advantage of the Apple products’ popularity, posing a threat to Sony’s PlayStation Portable and Nintendo Co Ltd’s DS.
A Sony spokesman declined to comment on the report.

iPhone 3G S Jailbroken

June 28, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

The Following was posted on Geo Hot’s blog early this morning:

It’s 4Am, do you know where your jailbreak is:

With that posted, we know that the iPhone 3G S is officially jailbroken by some well known and very respected people. It is said that the dev team and Geo Hotz do not want to release a jailbreak any time soon until the first update for the 3.0 software comes out. If the exploit used to jailbreak the 3G S is made public, Apple will be able to close that exploit and we will not be able to exactly jailbreak the 3G S as quickly. For everyone waiting to get an iPhone 3G S, it is a good idea to get it asap so your sure you will be able to jailbreak it. If you wait which is completely fine, you may not be able to jailbreak it as easy or as quickly because apple may update the firmware and such..

Sprint Targeting iPhone & AT&T In Ad

June 27, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

You can have a mighty fancy phone, but it’s only as good as the network it uses and the calling plans available to consumers. Look past the iHype and we think you’ll see a new Sprint with a strong network, appealing new phones and value-priced calling plans. We’ll keep striving to get even better, but we sure hope folks – especially those with contracts elsewhere expiring soon – will give Sprint a look.

White iPhone 3GS turn Brown on Overheating?!

June 27, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

There seems to be some new issues with the iPhone 3GS, besides the sound issues reported before. Instead of cracking like the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS turns brown if overheated!

A user claims discoloration of his iPhone due to overheating, possibly because of excessive 3G and GPS usage. It seems like an outline of the battery inside which got overheated badly, though not bad enough to burn someone’s lap . . .

This issue seems be unique to the user as there are no other reports of such discoloration of any new White iPhone 3GS’ and we hope it remains unique. The user reports that his phone has been sent in for analysis and he might be getting a replacement soon.

iPhone 3GS Availability Check Option Now Online

June 27, 2009 :: Posted by - SoSly :: Category - News

People can now check the availability of iPhone 3GS at their local stores online

, just like the last 2 years. This is a much needed service as usually Apple is low on stocks and people have to return empty handed. The page will refresh regularly with the latest stock info so you don’t have to move out . . . Users can check if the exact model they’d like to buy is available, that is, 16GB/ 32 GB and Black/ White.
